Default Brother MFC 9700 Slow printing/Network Printing

I have an MFC 9700 connected to my Win XP machine via parallel port and to
the BMFC: port in printer properties.

I also have 2 other PCs - 1 Win2k, 1 WinXP that print to it.

The print progress is very slooooow. It'll print 1 page, pause 30 seconds,
print another page or 2 then pause... all in all i'm averageing about 3 PPM.
I recently re-installed Win2k and am using the native Win drivers.

I tried to change the port to LPT1 from BMFC and I get printer garbage -
any suggestions would be helpful - how i can improve the print speed and
avoid getting print garbage from any pc
