Symantec has a removal tool(s) for its security software, named after

he
cares about his reputation any more. He hasn't been heard from much ever
since.
Maybe he retired to Acapulco or Cancun or somewhere else, to count his
wealth.
wikipedia does not mention what he did after 2000, so he must still be

It was a rhetorical question.

"Our software is so good that we had to create a utility/sw tool to remove
it."

I'd hate to have to walk into that office every day knowing that. Peter
Norton may not have to do so, but countless others do.

It's a farce.

He must read here...Steve, your products are bloated and expensive.

I use Avast and Kerio's free firewall. I wouldn't consider buying from
anyone as money oriented as you.

Spinrite isn't a firewall or virus checker. *Its a hard drive
diagnostic and it's been around for ages so I know it's tried and
tested. *I agree on the surface it's expensive but considering what it
does and how long it's been around, it might be worth every penny.
I believe those in the business use this software as one of their
tools.

My point was...I don't use (and avoid) *Gibson's products and gave
examples of such.

Ok very bad example. *You picked on the wrong title which weakened
your arguement considerably. *The reason for this is Spinrite has been
around for ages (not many other software can claim this) and it is
specialty type software. *What I mean is most people won't know how to
use it nor need it very often but if you consider what it can do and
what is your data worth to you, you might understand. * I won't argue
about other Gibson products due to my lack of knowledge on them but
next time you should be more careful for software examples. *Of all
software, you picked on the wrong one g * but your point is noted.
Personally I'd like to see a demo version but he addresses this on his
site and his counter is a 30 day money back guarantee so I guess you
could buy it and try it and if it doesn't work, in theory get your
money back.

I didn't pick a title...I found Ben's name there.
Spinrite was a product I was interested in years ago. I have no
problem with it. I only think it should have a more realistic price.

You read things...you want to believe...but not what I have said.

Honestly I can't think of many that have been around as long. Perhaps
there are but regardless Spinrite is a valuable tool and if you

Spinrite isn't necessary????

---- but maybe I should consider it for my new pc business because
lately I'm in the pc repair/improvement business thanks to my
inlaws... I never realized how valuable my pc knowledge is ...
REALLY but I won't make any money because I spend too much time
tweaking after the fix :-(

For inlaws I understand the free tech support. For friends I
sometimes charge, and for acquantences I always charge. It's
interesting how people are my friend when they want free computer
support and then they back off when I say that I would charge for my
services. I've offered a one-on-one trade of my computer services if
someone would clean my apartment, but no takers so far :-)

Yes, for my 2nd inlaw fix (yesterday) I offered a trade of services
since I needed my brother in law's services and he needed mine. I
spent more hours doing his fix then he will on mine so they will still
come out ahead if money were really paid for each. And once when I
was an active realtor, I remember talking to someone (stranger) and
finally when I told them that I would charge for my services up front,
they basically ended the conversation. I did this on purpose because
they were wasting my time.

Back on topic...
I don't think there is any fool proof method of knowing exactly when
the drive will die but I like "hard disk sentinel" because it monitors
in several ways my hard drives. It is not free tho as far as I know
(or I should say it wasn't when I got it). I think the best method
for most people like you and me is to make backups often because if a
drive goes bad, hopefully you don't lose much if at all. I think
Spinrite is a great product after the fact for the repair person who
has to deal with a bad drive. There may be other competitors to
Spinrite but I honestly don't know any that have been around as long.
