Default Presario SR1030NX hangs/lock up.

SR1030nx....randomly hangs up for 5-15 seconds. No ryhme or reason to when
or why this happens. Doesn't matter what apps are running or no apps
running at all. pc will hang as if something is consuming the processor
completely and every app currently running will slow way down or lock up
till this passes. I usually have media player running...and can ALWAYS tell
when this hang up/lock up occurs as the "visuals" in windows media will
freeze. No new software or hardware has been installed since this started.
Have run a virus check and ad ware checks over and over and come up with
nothing. Any suggestions at all. Thanx in advance for any help.

Russ

p.s. I remember having almost this exact problem with my "new" compaq
presario 400mhz. Back then it had something to do with the DMA setting on
the hard drive. was set wrong from the factory. Hoping it's something
simple like this again.

Check that the Indexing Service is not running. Control Panel,
Administrative tools, Services, navigate to Indexing Service,
right-click Properties, in Startup Type select Disabled, in Service
Status click Stop. Close out. Reboot. See if this helps.

Check all startup applications to verify if they are needed or you want
them to run: Start, Run Command, type: msconfig[enter key], select
Startup Tab. Review each startup application; use this site to help
decifer what they are and what they do:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php ; uncheck the box to
disable. It is best to note the application that is invoking the
startup and permanently disable the startup in the application
preferences.

Indexing IS turned off...and all the services listed under MSCONFIG are MS
services except for a few that have to do with apps installed on my
PC....i.e. Norton Antivirus. Not sure what services need NEED to be on and
which ones that don't so have no clue if ANY of these could be the cause of
my problem. Any other suggestions. Thanx in advance.

Is the computer connected to the internet when this happens? What happens if
the computer is not connected to the net? Could be some spyware "calling home"
after stealing some info from your computer. Could be other forms of spyware,
trojans, malware... Ben Myers

Thats what I have thought the problem is all along. Recentlly installed a
new spyware program....no changes even after it cleared a few programs.
Virus program is updated and finds nothing. I on the verge of doing a
restore and hopefully that would cure the problem but want to try everything
before I do that.

Before worring about saving any valuable data BEFORE doing a restore, and then
having to do the restore, download and run Spybot 1.3 and Ad-Aware SE. Make
sure you update them with the latest defintions used to track down and eliminate
spyware, malware, and other crud. Together, they do a reasonable job of
eliminating the varmints. It does not matter which one you run first. What one
fails to find, the other often does. Just make sure you use their latest most
up-to-date definitions... Ben Myers
