Default computer keyboard problem

Not a big problem, but I'm curious what's going on.

I have a dual boot pc, XP and Linux. Few days ago, the keyboard
started acting up. At XP login, nothing could be entered. Any key
pressed will only cause a beep. Same keyboard on Linux, however, was
just fine as like nothing happened. I replaced the keyboard with
another one (both are just regular PC keyboards, no fancy feature) and
XP is OK now. But if you put the other one back, the problem remained.

So what's going on here? The keyboard seems to be OK, since it works
with Linux. XP seems to be OK since it works with the other keyboard.

Thanks for any insight,

David
