Default Will an 8x AGP graphics card work in a 4x AGP mainboard ?

Hi, in general will an 8x AGP graphics card still be able to work in a 4x
AGP mainboard?

I'm wanting to upgrade the graphics card of a Compaq desktop PC, which is
about 9 years old. The mainboard of it has AGP version 2.0, max supported
transfer rate of 4x.

What are the chance of this 8x AGP graphics card working?

Cheers.

In general, yes. Specifically, perhaps not. I had a PCChips
motherboard at one point that would not work with a half a dozen 8x
cards. When I plugged in a 4x card (Radeon 9100, IIRC) it was off to
the races.

Probably fairly good. In spite of my aforementioned experience, all
other situations where I've plugged an 8x into a 4x slot, it was worked
fine.
