Default BIOS Paaword

I can get a used SONY PCG-GRV550 laptop in seemingly good condition
for a good price. But, the owner says the BIOS requires a password
which does not know. Is there a good way to by-pass a BIOS password?

Ask for the product serial number to see if Sony lists a
registered owner. If that owner is not the seller, they
might know the password, or it might be stolen. You might
web search for a Sony backdoor password, or check for a
battery and tiny pushbutton switch on the mainboard (not
connecting to a switch on the outside of the case) to clear
passwords, or a pair of solder pads labeled as such.

I suspect now that it might be stolen. Else why would the seller be
selling it because he cannot handle the password! I am going to
forget this one.

Thanks

Duke

Sometimes people do forget, they might've set up the
password when new and years went by without any need to
remember the password, but to cover your own liability it
would be good to determine if it's history is clean or if it
had been reported stolen (within local vicinity of the
seller) if it costs much.

The other question is, is it locked from booting without the
password, or is it only refusing to enter the bios without
it? The former is much worse than the latter, often they're
set up on auto-config and you wouldn't need to use the bios
menus for much if it'll boot past them.

I agree. This guy appears to be a vendor (EBay Item number:
380112269511). As I said, I think I should forget this one - although
I would really like to find one like it.
I have a model of that laptop that is locked in the BIOS and has bad
keyboard keys to boot. I am looking to cannibalize one make another
work. It may not be worth the effort.

Thanks

I suspect its from an office clearout or equivalent and the seller
specialises in selling office clearout items. The fact that it doesn't
include a hard drive or power supply would put me off, not the lack of a
bios password (which will resolvable via the suggestions of Kony or
VanguardLH).

Well -

Well, I was thinking to cannibalize it to fix another PCG-GRV550 that
was given to me. The latter has a hard and CD drive. I would need
the keyboard and LCD screen in order to fix those things in the
PCG-GRV550 that was given to me. The keyboard has keys that do not
working, and the screen has a vertical line in the center (?bad
pixels?).
