Default Dell laptop electrical cords interchangable?

The power cord on my OOOLLLLDDD Inspiron 5000 just broke. Is this
something I can go down to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy off the
shelf or will I need to get one from Dell directly??

Which cord? The power supply cord from the wall to the power
box? It is available but maybe not a Best Buy or Circuit City.
Try Micro Center or another one of the computer superstores.

The one from the power box to the (assuming you mean the big box
about halfway down that changes from household current to whatever it
need) to the computer itself. Actually the problem seems to be just at
the three pronged plug that goes into the side of the computer. The last
inch or so of the cord..

I would first search on line for a universal laptop power adapter. Radio
Shack may carry them as well. However, to be absolutely safest, I would
order a new poser supply from DELL. This way you are guaranteed
compatibility, and, if your laptop is still under warranty, it will not be
voided if anything should happen.

Dell laptops don't use universal power adapters, there's an additional
line for the power supply and computer to exchange capability
information, and Dell machines won't work without Dell supplies. Get
a real Dell replacement.

ebay is the answer for a machine this old. a new 'unirversal' type ac
adapter is much more expensive and the connector will be hard to find...
get an original replacement part from a reputable seller on ebay.
