2500 Barton KX-7 333R
Just wondering. Has anyone here been able to get an Athlon 2500 Barton
running in an Abit KX-7 333R? I've tried a number of clock speeds but so far, no post. Oh, I did get it to post once, but then XP pro blue screened during the install. Thanks. |

I'm running a Barton in mine. It's the version 1.0 board and still has the original 7M BIOS. Just popped it in, cleared the CMOS, POSTed to BIOS, and set my speed. The CPU isn't recognized by the board, and is declared to be an "Unknown CPU type", but it runs quite happily at 11.5x195, 1.775 V. What board version and BIOS do you have? What have you tried? -- sls I'm not sure of the board version(1.1?) but the bios is 6.0 PG, dated 08/22/02(I thought it was the latest). I haven't tried ramping it up to 195 nor have I stripped it to just the cpu/mem and video. I have 2 -512 Meg pc2700 Samsung memory DIMMS (not the greatest but stable). I also have a raid0 setup. I would like to do this without getting a new mobo and with luck just doing a repair install of XP pro. |

It also implies that you have the v1.1 board, unless you flashed to that BIOS yourself. Good. I re-read your first message, and am a bit confused. You said you only managed to POST once, yet have tried different clock settings. ??! POST is short for Power On Self Test, it's only the stuff up 'til you get chance to enter BIOS. Can you get to BIOS to set it up? Is it just Windows that fails to boot? Can you boot from a floppy? One with, say, Memtest86 on it? http://www.memtest86.com/ Can you boot with you Windows CD? -- sls |

Maybe I'm missing another setting in the BIOS because XP just doesn't seem to like the ones I have. Keep in mind that this is a CPU upgrade not a new install, I've been running an OC'd 1800+ for about 6 months. The swapping any one of the settings for APIC, ACPI, or PnP OS will give WinXP fits. If you had one of them one way before and the other way now... You might want to try underclocking, to see if it's a CPU or software problem. Heatsink on correctly, temps okay? -- sls |

It runs about 3 degrees hotter than my old 1800+ (41 Cent) but I may redo the HSF and theral paste. I'll worry about oc'ing later on. |
