Default Overclocking XP1600+

Hey again - its me :P

Yep - my Athlon XP1600+ is giving me problems - it works fine upto 1501 Mhz
(but only at 1.85v) on a 143Mhz FSB, but it will *not* go any higher. 145Mhz
Causes it to fail post, and i need to turn the system off, wait 20 minutes,
turn back on, and quickly change the FSB back to normal before attempting to
boot again.

The board in question is a Gigabyte GA-7VTXH w/KT266a

Cheers

I used to get 1750@140 from a Pal 1700 - so try raising the multiplier.

1501MHz? If it's a Palomino consider yourself lucky ;-) That's about all I
can squeeze out of my XP1600 on a SY-K7VTA Pro.

Erm - well its a Palomino core, and isnt it impossible to change the
multiplier? arent they locked? If it involves chopping the cpu around - i
dont really want to chance it.

No chopping, just a bit of sellotape, thermal grease and conductive paint
(apply with a razor blade).
It's quick and easy (if you use thermal goop not glue to pit fill).

The problem isn't the CPU, it's the PCI bus. I ran my 1600+ over 1800MHz
with 1.85v. Ran it 24/7 for months at 1733MHz. But I didn't jack up the
FSB (at least not too high), which jacks up the PCI and AGP buses.
