Compaq Deskpro EN Model/BIOS/Drivers

Thanks for the reply. I was at my son's house this weekend when I
posted this request. Passed your reply on to him since I do not have
access to his machine now that I am home.

Anyway, the operating system is Windows 2000. The form factor for the
system unit in question is a tower maybe about 2/3 as high as the
"standard" or full-size tower. I think the machine is in the 2000-2001
era time frame.

The system BIOS recognizes the devices. That is not the problem. What
is
missing are the software drivers for the devices. No matter which
model noted
above, the chipsets used by Intel on DeskPro P3 systems are Intel
chipsets.
Which operating system is running on the computer? No matter. Go to
www.intel.com and download at least three sets of drivers. Look for
the drivers
according to chipset, or just look up ANY Intel 815 chipset motherboard
made by
Intel and download the drivers. The Intel drivers work correctly in
any system
that uses Intel chipsets.

1. basic Intel 815 motherboard chipset drivers. Install these FIRST!
2. Intel 815 graphics drivers
3. Intel Ethernet drivers. Which ones? Open up the chassis and look
for an
Intel chip marked 82557, 82558, or 82559. The Ethernet chip is one of
these.

For audio, you need to look for the audio chip on the motherboard. It
is
probably an ADI chip and the drivers are AC '97. Beyond this, I'm not
too sure
where you can find the drivers, except that Compaq more or less
modified Intel
motherboard designs to come up with the ones for the P3 DeskPros.
"Modified" in
a logical sense. Physically, the Compaq motherboards are quite
different from
the Intel ones, sometimes VERY different... Ben Myers

Unit powers on permitting only VGA mode 16 colors (monitor is capable

(c) Video Controller (VGA Compat) PCI bus 0, device 2, fcn 0
All above show an error code of 28. No drives installed since the
manufacturer is not known. Hard drive, USB port, serial ports and
parallel ports all ok.

Both of the following questions have been posed in this forum this
January; however, the question still remains.

Problem 1: How can I determine what model this is? Contacted HP for
information and informed that warranty for this serial number ended
Sep2004. They would not even tell me the model number!

Problem 2: Power on unit hold F10 down but unable to get what has been
called the BIOS window. Just get the white on black window to select
information like system, security, etc. Able to get BIOS data showing
version installed. Downloaded the BIOS update SP22200 for v3.14 and
followed instructions to make the update diskette. Place diskette in
unit and power on and with or without F10 procedure only get message
"non-system disk". Unable to update BIOS. What am I doing wrong?

Problem 3: It is possible I could live with BIOS V2.11 if only I could
find the drivers for the three problem devices; however, I need the
model number for this approach. Not sure if the basic problem is in
the
BIOS (not recognizing the hardware; thus, no drivers found) or if the
hardware is known but do not have the drivers for it. Any ideas?
