Default Compaq Presario 6010 Boot (Electrical) problem.... HELP

I have a Presario 6010 US that just shut down on me the other day. I
stepped out of the room for a little while and it had just shut down,
and won't re-start. When I depress the power button, it used to turn
green for a moment, now there is a blinking red light just to the left
of the power button.

I'm running XP Professional, 512 ram and (2) 60 Gig WD Hard
drives.... I'm not getting power from the power supply (fan isn't
working) but I do get that blinking red light. Called "Compaq
support", and was told the unit was out of warranty (no brainer there),
and after being put on hold was advised that my problem wasn't with the
power supply, and I would NOT have to purchase any hardware... but to
fix my problem I would have to pay $$ to talk with their tech support
person, which I don't have at the moment.

Does anyone know where I can find this work around? I would really
hate to drop money on a Compaq tech support person just to find out
that this is a "quick fix".... HELP. If you've got a clue where I can
go, please shoot me a message....

Thanks....

Forget getting ripped off by Compaq tech support. The problem is either the
motherboard or the power supply, and I do not give a damn what the Compaq
support person told you.

The best way to figure out which one failed is to substitute known good
components, one at a time. I would start with a power supply. All the recent
(up to 3-4 years old) Compaq Presarios I've worked on use standard sized ATX
power supplies. If the computer is a Pentium 4, then you need an ATX-12v power
supply to supply the 12v needed by a P4 processor. If the computer is an AMD
Athlon, you probably need only an ATX power supply, but it would do no harm to
use ATX-12v and leave the 12v wire lead unconnected to the motherboard.

Detach ALL power supply connectors for the old power supply. Don't remove it
yet. Attach the motherboard connectors only for the new power supply, and see
if the computer powers up. If it does, remove old power supply, install new
one, connect up all power connectors and go.

Minimum recommended power supply wattage is 250w, more than Compaq's power
supply provides. 300w is even better, because it gives a margin of safety.

If you are uncomfortable doing this sort of work, seek out a COMPETENT local
repair shop, who should do the job for no more than $100. Tell them for sure
you do not need a Compaq-branded power supply, and that a good generic one will
do.

If the power supply replacement does not work, the motherboard croaked. THAT
is a different story, because you need a Compaq motherboard to keep your Windows
COA valid.

If you are in eastern Massachusetts, contact me. I do this sort of thing all
the time... Ben Myers email:
