Default USB2 Hard Drive Caddy

I am thinking of buying the following hard drive:

http://uk.aldi.com/
Go to Internal Hard Drive Drive to get a Western Digital 250Mb hard drive
for £79.99. This seems to be a good deal.

I am looking for a case to support this drive. I don't actually know the
exact term for this. Is it a caddy? Anyway, I have found one he
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=79985
Is there are better one I should go for?

Is this hard disk drive good value? I believe so.

Thanx.

This is a good deal (the drive is 250Gb, not Mb :-)

You do want a caddy. It's sometimes called an 'enclosure'. There are
usually two type of connection to your PC USB or Firewire - if you get
USB make sure the caddy is USB 2.0. The caddy that you found is not
suitable - it is for 2.5 inch drives (usually found in laptops). The
Aldi dive is a regualr 3.5 inch drive

Well it would be difficult to suggest worse.
1. That one is for 2.5" (Laptop) drives. The Aldi drive is a3.5" (Desktop)
drive.
2. Read the review it brings up an important point with respect to power
that may be relevent

The spec requirements for this drive are
Current Requirements
12 VDC
Read/Write530 mA
Idle510 mA

5 VDC
Read/Write450 mA
Idle400 mA

So I would guess it would struggle on a USB 500mA max channel.

Yes. Model number WD2500BB I believe. Around £100 most places and only have
the OEM 1 year guarantee.

The above is irrelevant as regards power, the disk will not take its power
from the USB bus if connected to an external enclosure. The 3.5" hard drive
enclosures are supplied with a separate power supply. Please see here

The above link is irrelevant as regards USB. It is firewire only.

I think the point was that any USB device supporting this drive would
require external power which you seem to be saying is present in all USB
enclosures as far a you know.

Thanx for that. The only one 3.5" caddy on Ebuyer appears to have poor
reviews.

Anyone know a good place where I can go to get a decent 3.5" caddy?

Also, are 3.5" drives good for using as USB2 hard drives, or should I stick
to 2.5" drives?

Thanx.

3.5 inch drives are fine, and much better value.

I have tried several different external enclosures. All of them had to be
sent back (for not doing what they were supposed to do, and often for not
doing anything at all!) except for the one from SVP/ Blankdiscshop at
http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acata...B_Devices.html

I have two of the 6th item down, the AC5041 Firewire & USB2 ext storage 5.25
at £24.98. It differs from what you're seeking in that it caters for 5.25
inch devices as well as 3.5 (so it can be used for an external DVD rewriter
for example) and it does both USB2 and Firewire. I have tried both
connections and find Firewire to be better imo - more hot swappable, for
example and with XP doesn't need any drivers to be installed.

I recommend this item. It comes with leads for both flavours, it is easy to
fit the drive into and it has a good fan. They are also a good company to
deal with. There is a version below it which is USB2 only at £14.98 but I
haven't tried it. That looks like exceptional value, though the lack of
Firewire would put me off.

I have a similar drive which I am using with an eBuyer enclosure
(QuickFind code 74821) currently at £19.

On the plus side this enclosure is held together with "Thumb Screws"
so no tools are required for assembly. It also runs nice and cool.

On the minus side 3.5" drives need to be stationary when operating
(movement can cause damage) but the plastic stand supplied by eBuyer
is flimsy and insufficient for this task. Also the fan is noisy and
produces a high pictched whine all the time.

Is this hard disk drive good value? I believe so.

The drive is excellent value for money. I'd be suprised if stores
have any in stock after the staff have taken their share.

Nick.

Specialtech are worth a look

http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/

I bought an external 4 bay HD enclosure from them and they were very
helpful when I had some questions.

They do caddies as well.
