problem with internet... stops working after a couple of pages
hi there
a friend recently had the msblast virus and then removed it following the steps that were listed on the norton site. now, whenever she goes onto the internet, it works for about a minute (i.e. browse to two or three sites) and then just gets constant 'page not found' errors. The system is windows xp, and i have tried everything .... uninstall/reinstall modem, try a different ISP.... re-do msblast fix, ran windows update....... but the problem remains. there is no firewall active (winxp or zonealarm etc.). i have checked task manager and nothing suspect seems to be running... i am now thinking i need to reformat and reinstall, which i clearly want to avoid if possible.... does anybody know how i can fix this problem? thanks |

Can you traceroute/ping, do lookups work using nslookup or is it solely an Internet Explorer problem? regards, Paul -- paul at spamcop.net |

Have seen some hijackers lately that fill it with junk and as these sites get taken down, the Page Not Found errors come up. You can safely delete the Hosts file as well, but it can come in handy if you understand it. JT |

you can also reset your network stack in XP by going to a CMD prompt:
startruncmd then o.k. once there type in netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt hit enter then reboot the PC. as for the HOSTS file, you can search for it just type in hosts then search your entire hard drive. you will probably have hosts and lmhosts. you can delete the hosts file altogether as it isn't needed by windows to begin with. hope this helps.
