Added second HD - Win XP device mgr shows it working but no driveletter?
Windows recognizes the new hardware (Maxtor 98196H8) and the Device
Manager reports that it is working properly. How do I get it assigned to a drive letter so it will show up in the "My Computer" window? Or do I have to format it some other way first? Thanks for advice. |

Thanks for advice. Start | Run | diskmgmt.msc Do you see "Disk 1" there? Right-click on "Unallocated" hatched area. New Partition | Next | Primary Partition | Next | accept size | Next | Assign the following drive letter: | chose letter - could be E | Next Format this partition with the following settings | check Perform a quick format Next | Finish |

In Disk Management, the second drive shows up in the top pane of the Disk Management screen, correct disk size, but with no drive letter assigned. It says the drive is "healthy and "active" but the file system type is blank. If I right click on the disk in the lower pane (Disk 2 Basic) all the options are greyed out except "delete partition" and help. |

Well, I can do that as a last resort, but my goal was to have access to all the files that were on that HD when it was in my son's old now-dead PC - including several thousand mp3s. Thanks for the tips, they really speeded up the process for me. |
