Laptop woes Fixed
"db" wrote in message
... Well in earlier post i mentioned my problem with a laptop and how to install an os with no floppy and cd etc. Well i hooked the laptop hdd up to the main pc with a 3.5-2.5" ide cable, booted and installed xp up to the point it says it is going to reboot (about halfway though installation). Put it back inthe laptop so all the onboard devices could be found and installation complete. It didn't work.. i seen the windows image pop up for about a second and i got the *windows has stopped...blah blah balh damage to your computer blah blah blah* Tried it again with windows 98 se and yeahh it works so 98se yes xo no ohh i did have an external pcmcia cd but it wasn't bootable, but needed during the final installation stage. (there is a 66pin port which i think might be for a cd player that would boot) Thanks for previous help. (shame xp didn't work though) db Just a wild idea and completely untested: when you installed XP onto the laptop HD via the desktop machine, did you try simply going all the way with the install? And then install the recovery console too? There is just a chance that you could still get into the recovery console when the drive was re-installed in the laptop and do a repair installation via the external unbootable cd. -- John McGaw [Knoxville, TN, USA] Return address will not work. It is possible that the Cd of Xp you have isn't bootable but rather a "repair" version. As you probably know already Xp is a lot more stable than 95 and presumably ME or 98. Its also a lot bigger so you may be better off with it than XP. LOL claus |

My idea was that if you could get into that then you might be able to use the CD drive to do a repair install which would load the proper HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) which would suit the laptop hardware rather than the one which got installed when the laptop drive was used on on the desktop. Just an idea but it seems like it would have some (maybe vanishingly small) chance of working. It all hinges on the recovery console being able to read the external drive and I don't really have a clue about that. -- John McGaw [Knoxville, TN, USA] Return address will not work. "db" wrote in message .. . snip... hmm didn't know you could do that.. how do you install that? I won't try explaining it here for fear of a typo that might fry something ;-). Go to a machine that has XP running, open the help, and type "recovery console" (without quotes) into the search box, and full instructions should come up. Good luck. -- John McGaw [Knoxville, TN, USA] Return address will not work. Please reply in group or through my website: http://johnmcgaw.com |
