Designing a new case.... a quick quesitionaire?
Hi guys,

I am a final year undergraduate studying Industrial design and i am
redesigning the computer case... Perhaps some of you would have time
to answer some very quick questions to help me on the way?

In a new case you bought....

1).How many 5.25" drive bays would you require?
2).How many 3.5" drive bays would you want?
3).Would there have to be room for every PCI card to accomaodate
full-length PCI cards. If No, how many would you want?

List in order of importance (highest first) what you would look for in
a new case...

Silent Operation, High Power PSU, Styling, Excellent Heat Dissapation,
Ease of Assembling a System inside, Price, Unique Design.

Any other comments you wish to make like things you would like ot see
in a new design would also be very much welcome.

Either reply to the post or email me direct on

Thanks

I shoot for as much as I can get....I have an Inwin case, room for 5
5.25' drives,1,floppy ( who needs more?), a 500 Watt power supply, 6
PCI slots on mobo so I can add Ultra66/100/133 cards to add zillions
of HDD's. My case has a slideable panel that the mobo sits on for
ease of access. Make sure it has plenty of spaces for cooling fans.
I'm a geek so I don't care about silent operation or styling-can't
help you there !

If you're looking for price, check out
www.compgeeks.com they sell
new and refurbished stuff dirt cheap and I've never had problems with
anything I've bought from them.

Oh, my rankings: power supply first, heat next, then ease of assembly.
The others don't apply to me- my system usually runs with half the
case removed cuz' I'm always reconfiguring things !

Six, at least. Eight might be usable.
The case could be 'double-width' to allow the drives to be mounted
two-across.

2).How many 3.5" drive bays would you want?

Eight or ten.

Hmmm.. a twelve-inch to fourteen-inch PCI card. Maybe two or three,
although I'm not familiar with any full-length PCI cards.

List in order of importance (highest first) what you would look for in
a new case...

Silent Operation, High Power PSU, Styling, Excellent Heat Dissapation,

Ease of assembly (Antec produces some well-made and easy to use cases)
(A case which is easy to use seems to provide above-average
ventilation.)

Ventilation (Heat dissipation)
Power supply at 500 watts or so (branded)
Unique design would probably follow as a matter of course.
Silent operation isn't concern. Working in a 24/7 data center and
running 5 machines at home kind of helps me ignore the noise.
Price.. if the market thinks it's worthwhile, the market will accept
it.

Any other comments you wish to make like things you would like ot see

Maybe the ability to mount two ATX form-factor boards in one case.
Allow two power supplies.
Of course, allow for sufficient ventilation through the case and
around the components.
