Default internet connection problem - hardware or O/S?

If the gateway device were my own, I wouldn't necessarily replace it
with my own money because I could get around the problem of having
enough ports some other way. I don't like to spend money unless I
have to either.

It's hard for me to say if I "own" The Gateway device or not. AT&T
provided it "free", including installation, as part of their customer
retention program when I switched to AT&T Uverse internet service from
AT&T's DSL service. All I know for sure is that my monthly bill does
not list a separate line item charge for the router.

Still, it'd probably be useful for me to see if AT&T would replace it
because I'm guessing that the wi-fi component of the router uses the
older 2.4 Ghz 802.11 (??) speeds. IIRC, 802.11ac wasn't available back
then. Of course, the one wi-fi device I use (a TCL Roku TV) is limited
to the 2.4 Ghz speed LOL.

Regardless, thank you for taking the time to read and respond to what
was undoubtedly a long-winded recap of the steps I took trying to
troubleshoot a network connection problem and narrowing it down to a
hardware issue invovling the router, and eliminating both the mobo
hardware and a O/S update as culprits.

You might ask tech-support, what their upgrade policy on routers is.

The 589 is a b/g/n 2.4 wireless not a dual band.

The 599, 5268 are dual band b/g/n/ac wireless.
Released summer 2015, initially used for GigaMarket
accounts but being used on non Giga accounts now as well.

This is the spec for the 5268AC.

And this is the Arris(Motorola) 599 for comparison.
