Default Cheapest RAID system?

Hi,

I have a Shuttle system. I'm looking for an external Raid 1 system
using a Firewire connection preferrably. Something simple i.e. two
hard drives and the cheaper the better (around £400)! Is there such a
thing?

I recently started reading about NAS. Although they seem to connect
via a Rj45 Ethernet cable, that wouldn't pose a huge problem. . Is NAS
RAID a possibility for me within my budget?

Thanks,

Al.

Firstly no flames please, this is a workable solution that I have used
at home for ages and the performance is great..

You could use an old PC running Linux with 2 or more hard drives to
setup a home made NAS..

An old P2 or P3 off ebay will hit you about £80 - £120 with a NIC..
maybe less..

Get 2 hard drives with the rest of the cash..

Install Linux using software RAID (don't worry its plenty fast enough
for most entry level requirements).. Then install SAMBA and NFS to
access the storage from Windows and Linux PC's..

If you want web based admin (recommended) install Webmin which will
allow you to manage your shares, users and quota's easily..

Total Software cost £0
Total Hardware cost £150 - £400 ( depending on hard drive size )

Hope that helps..

Hi,
sounds like a reasonable solution. Unfortunately, I don't know
anything about Linux. Is it reasonable to assume that taking Linux
from a magazine cover e.g. PC PRO, PC PLUS will have everything I need
on there to cover what you descibed above?
I'll definately need web admin as the machine will be located
downstairs without a monitor or keyboard connected to it.

Thanks.
