Default OT/If I Have XP SP2...Is there any "real" need to install SP3?

Hi!

Microsoft's stance has traditionally been that the previous service
pack for a given Windows product would be supported for twelve months
from the date that the current service pack came out. Now it seems to
have changed to twenty-four months.

In this case, Windows XP Service Pack 2 (in all releases) is supported
until July 13th, 2010. Windows XP will be in extended support until
2014. This would tend to imply that (so long as no other Windows XP
service packs appear) you will need SP3 installed to get updates in
the time between mid-2010 and 2014 when all support ends.

Service Pack 3 does add a very small amount of new functionality, most
of it pointed at business operations. One of these features is
"network access protection" which requires that a PC be "clean" and
approved before it can join a network. It also has hotfixes, some of
which were only available by contacting Microsoft support to determine
if the fix applied to your system.

I've had no problems upgrading to it, and on a fresh system, it saves
time by cutting down (at least a little bit) the number of updates you
need to install from M$ Update to have a secure system. This has been
the case on systems new and old. Systems that have been troubled with
spyware or viruses in the past may have problems, as could those that
are unstable. I would recommend backing up your data prior to
installing the service pack.

Any "real" reason why you shouldn't?

If your reason for not wanting to install SP 3 is that you're afraid it
will cause damage to your computer, time to smell the coffee: SP 3 is
not the problem.

SP3 installed okay on my machines, not that I have much in the way
of software running that would present it with unusual
difficulties.

If you don't have good backups anyway, of course, you ought to,
and this would be a good occasion to start.

It's not ``if'' your HD will crash, but when.

The reason to install it is that you get to use the common path
for updates instead of the exceptional path each month.

The best reason for installing SP3 is to get in all the band-aids,
bubble gum, tissue paper that update Windows Ementhaler cheese security.

Good question !! *Be interesting what others have to say.

*I answered it this way to myself... since all my 3rd party software
works good, why take a chance messing around with SP3. * I don't
recall reading anything bad about SP3 nor anything revelating neither
so I figured I'd leave well enough alone with my system. * But later I
might try windows 7 if I'm up for the challenge, that being in case my
3rd party software is picky. *

My sys came with SP1...and SP2 was a big resource improvement by M$.
From what I have gleaned here and elsewhere...I don't see the need.

I use a fair amount of third party software and freeware and have only
found that my diskdefrag program Diskkeeper doesn't work correctly
with SP3. It is strange that if I have a SP2 system and install SP3 I
have no problems but if I do a clean install of a SP3 disk then
Diskkeeper gives error messages and will not run in the background.

That is strange Art and appreciate your experience. If I wasn't so
lazy I might try SP3 but I don't see what I have to gain or that I
would gain a lot so I'll wait till windows 7 instead. I used to run
Diskeeper and it was then one of my most solid programs. I liked it a
lot. Perhaps if I can find my old program lying around, I might
install it on my current system. Thanks for reminding me.
