Default 8x DVD Writer but only 4x DVR-R media?

I'm thinking buying a DVD Writer. I've spot DVD writers that has '8X'
marked on their boxes at computer stores, but I only find DVR-RW or
DVR+RW media at 2x or 4x at these stores. Where can I find some
that's capable of 8x? Is it possible to burn 4x disks at 8x speed?

I dont think they have 8x rewriteable speeds. As usual rewritables I
think lag way behind the fastest write once media. In fact many of the
early 4x writers only wrote RWs at 2.4-2x.

Actually most of the cheap stuff I see selling at Compusa on sale is
1x write once but you can write to it at 2x. In fact Nero only says 2x
on my writer. The brand name stuff tends to vary between 2x-4x.

As for buying 8X media, you probably just have to wait -- it is so new to
the market that supplies are short and most of the retail channel hasn't
taken it seriously yet because the demand is small. As for burning 4X media
at 8X it has been reported that the Plextor PX-708X is capable of doing it
but I'm sure that it will only manage the trick with top-quality 4X media.

I've had a CD-R drive for months now that is capable of writing at 52x but I
haven't seen any media rated at 52x.

No you can't burn 4x disks at 8x. The 8x disks have not been released yet.

I read an article that says Verbatim started shipping 8x in November. I've
also read of people using 8x in alt.video.dvd.tech, alt.video.dvd.software.
So they are out there somewhere, probably just not common in the stores. I'm
sure you could find them online if you search.

I suspect Plextor engineers and drive owners would strongly disagree with
you!!! ;-)

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

As such things go, it's likely that it's _possible_, but it's also
likely that your success may be hit or miss since that's the value of
media being "certified" at a given speed--the certification guarantees
that the media is gonna work across a wide array of available
burners.

Given that 8x certified media isn't mainstream yet, you'll likely find
that 4x media might work, but it might not. It costs little however,
to try it an see.

The dvdrhelp.com database might tell you which types of media folks
are having success with, however. Or the folk on more DVD specific
newsgroups that live and die this stuff.

Best Regards,
