limitation of SODIMMs (fewer pins)?

I was tearing down a HP all-in-one ****box, and noticed that it used
SO-DIMMs, like a notebook. Now, these have 204 pins, versus 240 for desktop
DIMMs. What is lost? Smaller maximum address space or data bandwidth?

Apparently none of the above. Although I wouldn't put it past HP to
cut costs, the only benefit appears to be one of (derived over larger,
more common RAM) size constraints.

I think most of the pin reductions come at the expense of useless ground
pins. I doubt data pins are lost. The ground pins are just there to
flush away overvoltages and stuff, and in a laptop, there's no
overclocking allowed anyways, and so the memory always stays within
proper JEDEC specifications.
