Default IDE Harddrive cables

I was told that the IDE hard drives work better with the 80 wire cables
than with the 40 wire ones. I know a guy who has a lot of this stuff and
he gave me a few of the 80 wire cables. But there is a problem. All of
the ones he gave me, have about 2.5 or 3 inches between the two plugs on
the drive end. My old 40 wire cable has about 8 or 9 inches between
them. Because of the way my computer is setup, I MUST have that 8 or 9
inch spacing. The drives are not mounted right next ot each other and
cant be mounted that way in the case I have.

Do they make the 80 wire cables with wide spacing between the drive
plugs? OIherwise I'll have to just keep using my old 40 wire cable.
I really dont know if this will improve anything, anyhow, on a computer
made in 2000, running Windows 98???? I just thought I'd give it a try.

This 18" is spaced 6" and 12".

This 24" is spaced 9" and 15".

The 36" is spaced 16" and 20".

I don't think I've used any of the exotic ones.
Just the 18" ones that come in the motherboard box.

The longer ones might be for a full tower or something.

The connectors are removable (if you're careful) and can be
re-installed at the locations of your choosing. Or alternatively, buy
an new connector and install it at the preferred location. The extra
connector on the cable doesn't do any harm.

Years ago, I made a cable by using two single drive cables. I removed
the connector from one cable and put it on the other one. It worked. But
that was a 40 wire cable.

It would seem to me that it would be a lot harder to do on a 80 wire
cable. Those wires are very thin and close together. I know that the
extra 40 wires are all grounds, so if any "live" wire accidentally
touched a ground wire, the cable would not work....

Ebay sells the connectors too.

I also noticed on ebay that they now sell these cables with round wires
instead of the flat ribbon type. Is there any advantage to those round
ones?

Round cables help with airflow, but are otherwise
an abomination.

You should drop into a good computer store and stock
up on cables. I usually buy a $50 bag of odds and
ends, when I'm on a "cable run", so I'll have a
few things in stock. For example, I picked up a
bunch of Y power cables the last time I got stuff.
Those come in handy.
