Do they make mobos with an internal USB port?
I have a USB port that mounts in a 5.25 bay and plugs into a USB port.
Do any mobos come with an internal port (not the pins)? |

?I've not seen a mobo with an internal USB port but that's not to say one
might not be available somewhere. On the other hand PCI cards are readily available. I have a PCI card (4 ext+ 1 int) in an old build that I use for testing. They are fairly inexpensive from Newegg, etc. but pci-e cards are expensive. Could you just run a cable through an unused slot to a external USB port on your current mobo. Do I understand that you are looking to make your mobo decision based on whether or not its USB will match your USB bay's connector? Wouldn't it be better to make an important mobo decision based on more important factors and 'adjust' for the USB connection discrepancy? There are all kinds of ways to solve the 'normal' condition of the mobo having pins for the USB. -- Mike Easter |

Do they make mobos with an internal USB port?

If an internal device wants to connect to a USB controller, it should have the requisite header connector to do so. The externally-facing USB port shouldn't assume that you have a some rare motherboard that happens to have a USB port on it instead of USB header pins. Seems the unidentified USB drive bay unit was designed to plug into a USB daughtercard that has an internal USB port; otherwise, the USB drive bay might have a ludicrous routing of running its cable through a case opening to go outside and then plug into a backpanel USB port (you lose a backside USB port to bring it to the front). Do you have a web page link to the so far unidentified USB drive bay? |

Not only can you look at the device up close, but you can even zoom in on the box/packaging information and read it. Considering how many items they must have in their inventory, that must be quite an undertaking to catalogue and 'connect' all that data and images. -- Mike Easter |

Moot. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815201028 Nice catch. I didn't know they made something like that. ******* Motherboards can have up to three 2x5 pin headers, giving up to six internal USB2 ports available. The only thing you'd have to watch for, is whether that Koutech gadget will conflict mechanically, with anything in the vicinity. For example, if you installed three of those stacks, you might have problems routing cables. With only one of those installed, there shouldn't be a problem. When you install a cable in that thing, you'll need to tie wrap the USB cable to the adjacent drive bay framework. That will be necessary, as the pin header has no retention feature to hold it in place. To help support it, it may help to take the strain off the cable, with a tie wrap. Some motherboard pin headers, have a supporting plastic frame around them, while others use just the pins. It's also possible there is some variation between motherboard models, in how long those pins are. All should make proper electrical contact, it's just some of them will grip better than others. And that's where the nylon tie comes into play. ******* I checked the Koutech site, and can't find a pinout for the connector on the IO-UU220. This page, shows some of the variations possible. An older motherboard may use some of the alternatives. What they don't mention here, is some motherboards use "OC#" instead of "S-GND" on the odd pin, and in most cases you wouldn't want to connect to it. OC# is just a curse, because when you plug in an adapter, ground touches the signal and the port shuts off in response. OC stands for OverCurrent, and those motherboard designs are prefaced on the adapter being responsible for detecting an over current situation. Most motherboards now, use a PolyFuse on the motherboard to protect the port, and the handling of OC# is purely an internal motherboard issue, hidden from the user. So a modern motherboard, doesn't have an OC# pin. http://www.frontx.com/cpx108_2.html +5V +5V This is my assumption as to D- D- what Koutech used for a pinout. D+ D+ There are some odd-ball older GND GND motherboards, where plugging in S-GND this adapter, would shut off the ports. The S-GND should go to the "metal can" of each Koutech connector. The GND is a signal ground, one of the four USB connector signals. In the USB cable, S-GND is what is connected to the metal shielding around the cable bundle. Paul |

I also have a PCI card that does USB, but they are getting stingy with PCI slots now a days. You only get two spots most of the time. A wireless network card and a sound card are two things that haven't been replaced on the mobo yet. |
