Default LaserJet 2200DN cleaning procedure problem

The LaserJet 2200 User Manual describes a procedure for cleaning the
printer by feeding through a transparency (preferably) or a sheet of
copier paper in a special cleaning mode that is supposed to be initiated
by pressing "Go" and "Cancel" until the lights flash, then pressing "Go."

I have tried this several times, but no matter how long I hold down the
"Go" and "Cancel" buttons, the lights do not flash, and when I release
the buttons I get the two-page status report.

Does this work for other people? Is there some special trick?

The Service Manual describes a different procedu simply hold the "Go"
button down for at least 10 seconds. That works.
