Default alternating paper and ink lights on epson c88

This event started after doing a couple of head cleanings after I
refilled the cartridges. After turning the printer off, pushing a small
flange towards the back of the printer head I was able to pull the
printer head to remove the cartridges. I reseated the cartridges, pushed
them down into the compartment completely, closed the door and the red
lights still continue to flash. I also turned off the printer,
disconnected the power cable and waited about 5 minutes and turned it on
again. No difference. Additionally, I held both ink/paper feed buttons
while turning the printer on for several seconds. No change. I also
used the SSC utility to reset all values with no change.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jan Alter
