Default Case front panel audio connectors - Help

I'm putting together 2 PCs, both using a PC Chips Mobo, but each with
a different case.

I've connected the front panel usb fine. I'm a bit unsure about the
front panel mic and headphone sockets though. Any guidance on which
connector goes where would be appreciated!

Heres the Mobo usb pin layout;

1. Aud Mic 2. Aud Gnd
3. Aud Mic Bias 4. Aud Vcc
5. Aud FPOut R 6. Aud Ret R
7. HP on 8. Key
9. Aud FPOut L 10. Aud Ret L

Pins 5&6 and 9&10 are jumpered.

Case 1 Cables (prob the easier of the two - Case front sockets are Mic
and headphones);
Mic;
A. Mic In
B. Mic Pwr
C. Gnd

Headphones;
D. Gnd
E. L out
F. L ret (on a cable from (E)
G. R out
H. R ret (on a cable from (G)

Case 2 Cables (might be a bit trickier - Case front sockets are Mic
and headphones);
Cable 1 (unknown);
I. L in
J. L out
K. Gnd
L. Mic in

Cable 2 (unknown);
M. R in
N. R out
O. Gnd
P. Mic in

A quick summary from someone of which letter connector on each case
goes to which number pin on the mobo would help me a lot!! Are there
any rules for this? As usual the case instuctions are less than
understandable.

Thanks

It's just common sense. You already know which pins on the board do what
and what the connectors do. Just hook em up :-) Left headphones connect to
9 and 10, right to 5 and 6 etc etc.

USB? or Audio?

These are AUDIO signals, not USB signals.

1. Aud Mic 2. Aud Gnd
3. Aud Mic Bias 4. Aud Vcc
5. Aud FPOut R 6. Aud Ret R
7. HP on 8. Key
9. Aud FPOut L 10. Aud Ret L

B -- 3
C -- 2

Headphones;

F. L ret (on a cable from (E)
G. R out
H. R ret (on a cable from (G)

D -- 2
E -- 5
F -- 6
G -- 9
H -- 10

Yes, I notice you have two on 2. This might cause a small problem
....

Case 2 Cables (might be a bit trickier - Case front sockets are Mic
and headphones);
Cable 1 (unknown);
I. L in
J. L out
K. Gnd
L. Mic in

I -- 10
J -- 9

(might need to swap .. In and Out to/from what?)

K -- 2
L -- 1

Cable 2 (unknown);
M. R in
N. R out
O. Gnd
P. Mic in

M -- 6
N -- 5

(Again, might need to be swapped.)

O -- 2
P -- 1

Yah - there's rules. Ground to ground, MIC_BIAS is also MIC_PWR or
MIC_Vcc. Left out from motherboard to Left Signal, Left Return to Left In
or RP Connector, and same for the right side.

Perfectly understandable if you stop and think about it a bit ...

Can I just re-wire the connector so that I have the two gnd wires
going to pin 2?

Pin 7 is "HP on", presumably headphones on ! I assume the intention of
this was to mute the speakers if headphones are plugged in. With the
wires provided can I get this to work? (ie would connecting the gnd
wire from the HP socket achieve this?)

So in this case (no pun intended), I'll have two connectors on both
pins 1 and 2, and nothing connected to pin 3(Mic Bias) or pin 7 (HP
on). Are you sure this will work? I don't have two microphone
sockets....I'm now even more confused.

No time to stop and think....are the rules written down anywhere? -
I'm particularly interested in the "HP on" pin.

Thanks for your help (so far...)

Actually 3 (probably), one for MIC, one for audio out, one for audio
Return. (in each of the shielded cables, if that is what you have).

Pin 7 is "HP on", presumably headphones on ! I assume the intention of
this was to mute the speakers if headphones are plugged in. With the
wires provided can I get this to work? (ie would connecting the gnd

That is not implemented at this time. If you could get control ovr
that line, I think youd need some sort of audio gate to mut the
speakers, and activate the HP amplifiers.

I just built a front panel (using the back end of an old soundcard).
I used a handful of PC audio cables (that connect CD drives to
soundcards), and adapted them to the soundcard and the J_AUD connector
on the Mobo (plus a spare line in). I have a toggle switch on the
panel that disconnects audio to the speakers (line out on the rear).
I am using the amps on the old soundcard board to drive the hedphones,
powering them fromn the AUD_VCC on the J_AUD connector. I have to yet
figure out how to connect the game connector, and have to debug the
USB connectors (taken from the USB connectors that plugged onto the
Mobo, and sat in one of the PCI slot plates.

Case 2 Cables (might be a bit trickier - Case front sockets are Mic
and headphones);
Cable 1 (unknown);
I. L in
J. L out
K. Gnd
L. Mic in

I -- 10
J -- 9

(might need to swap .. In and Out to/from what?)

K -- 2
L -- 1

Cable 2 (unknown);
M. R in
N. R out
O. Gnd
P. Mic in

M -- 6
N -- 5

(Again, might need to be swapped.)

O -- 2
P -- 1

No need to. The jack will switch if you wire it right.

And if you lose audio completely, then switch the in and out for
each side.

That would be confusing, yes. I'm not sure that it's actually
listed that way ...

There's a good chance that one of the two MIC pins is for MIC_BIAS
instead. But with the info given, we can't tell.

You'll have to check what the MB manufacturer means for that.

Actually 3 (probably), one for MIC, one for audio out, one for audio
Return. (in each of the shielded cables, if that is what you have).

See the description. 5 and 6 are currently shorted, so 5 is audio
from the motherboard, 6 is the RETURN that goes to the BACK jack. So that a
switching jack can disable the rear jack ...

I thought that is what I said.

That's not a "ground" return, but a "signal back out" return.

What I am saying is that there are 6 signals that
connect to that connector, You will probably be using shielded
dual-conductor wire, which makes 3 cables, 3 grounds.

Otherwise, there's be NO audio with 5 and 6 shorted (and 9 and 10)
...
