Default Low cost web-cam monitoring software?

I am in the unique position to offer some assistance to a company in
the form of webcam monitoring. They don't want to spend anything, but
it might lead to a job for me.
Can someone fill me in on a cheap or even free webcam monitoring
software that I can use?

The computer would be running 8-10 hours during the day
the webcam would need to ALWAYS be capturing the images

I am hoping this is easy to set up, but time will tell.

Thanks in advance,

I didn't post a link. that was part of your message.

Try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/default.mspx

Try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ncoder/default...

Thanks for that. I didn't know that WMP did that stuff. I had heard
about software out there that takes small gif or jpg every 2 seconds
or something so the file sizes aren't so large. If the webcam is
running all the time, like 8-10 hours, the video files would be huge,
huge, huge - but then again, I am not sure exactly what the WMP can
do...
Have you used it in this way? Thanks again,

This is not WMP, it's WME. Windows Media Encoder. Yes, I have used it. This
will encode the image so the live stream can be viewed with WMP. It can also
save the stream. As you said, it is very large, but all video files are.

A lot depends on what you are doing with the images.

Are you looking to record some live event and view it later?

Are you setting up a security system where you want to record someone doing
something?

Different applications need different software.

Yes, it is going to be for security. The files might be used later
for something, I am not sure - that is why I was also looking into
the software that records every 1 second (or differing periods
depending on the user) and saves them to gif or jpg image sequence. I
suppose with the right codec, the file size can always be made smaller
- and if the image size - 320X240 compared to 640X480, the size might
be smaller as well. A quality setting would also be a boon, if it has
it. Does it matter what webcam?

I have it working fine, but I cannot see it via the web - I tried what
he says here :
http://www.bobhobby.com/2008/03/02/h...ebcam-as-cctv/

But he even states at the end that he can't see it via the
168.1.101.291:8080 (or something like that).
I am not sure how to be able to view it from another computer with an
internet connection. This is going to be key because the client is
going to want an archive copy as well as wanting to be able to
monitor.

Lastly, when I tried the live streaming, it told me I need to filter
out people that could log in and see the video, but I could figure out
how to do that either.

Any ideaS?

I use port forwarding to give access from the outside, but also change to
port to something not likely to be tried.

You can also set up an SSL connection for more privacy.

So you went into your router to do the port forwarding, I am guessing?
I am not sure what the SSL connection is - I will look into it.
