Default question on my PC3200

I have a quick question about my memory and setup in terms of overclocking..

I purchased Corsair PC3200 memory with the expectation that it can run at
400mhz, but it seems to fail in this ambition (i get a memory error in the
bios, have to reboot the machine). When I when I try to overclock the FSB
to 400Mhz in the bios (anything over 167) I get memory errors...

motherboard: A7N8X 2.0 (which should run at 400mhz ..)
cpu: AthlonXP 2600+ 333

SiSoftware Sandra reports my memory as the following (I have 2x512mb):

Memory Module 1 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)
Memory Module 2 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)

I don't understand why it says "PC2700" in there at the end, but '3200' in
the beginning. When I bought this memory it was listed as PC3200. And it
says it is limited to 167MHz, which also seems to be the barrier to the BIOS
when I try to overclock.. (i can't get it higher than 333mhz fsb)

any ideas as to what my problem is?

Thanks very much

SiSoft Sandra sucks. It ain't that accurate. I would say that your RAM is
rated CAS 2 to 166MHz and CAS2.5 to 200MHz. Do you have it set to CAS 2
perchance? Drop it to 2.5 and try it again.

~misfit~

Is there a program that does what Sandra does, but better? I just tried
setting the CAS to 2.5 .. in the bios it was set at 2T, I changed that to
2.5. I still had the memory error (have to reset CMOS) when I set the FSB
to 200Mhz. As far as I know, all PC3200 memory supports 400Mhz FSB, am I
wrong? It would suck if my memory is only rated to 333Mhz FSB

thanks for your help, i appreciate it..

Here's your memory (
http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/...512-3200c2.pdf ), says
nothing about PC2700, so I don't know where that's coming from. Suppose to
run 200MHz clock, 2.5-3-3-6 on AMD, a little faster on Intel (2-3-3-6). I
assume this is the SPD results during config.

So there's no reason you shouldn't be able to run the Athlon (@ 166MHz
clock) in sync (1:1) w/ your memory (underclocked @ 166MHz). Now, as you
increase the CPU FSB, are you saying you are getting memory errors?? I
assume the CPU FSB will OC even a little, so it would surprise me to see
errors w/ even 167MHz (1:1).

What I'm wondering is whether maybe you're actually trying to run async
(e.g., 5:6, 166 / 5 * 6 = 200, not even sure this is possible w/ NForce2
chipset, just speculating), so therefore everytime you OC the CPU FSB,
you're also overclocking the memory! If the memory is already tapped out at
PC3200 (200MHz clock), especially if perhaps you're trying to run 2-3-3-6
(not the certified 2.5.-3-3-6), then perhaps it just dies at even a hint
above 200MHz clock.

I'm just speculating, but it's my guess this is what you're trying to do.
Remember, every time you OC the CPU FSB, the memory is OC'd too! That's why
the proper thing to do w/ this CPU and memory is run 1:1! You're trying to
OC the FSB, but you don't want the memory holding you back. If you insist
on running the memory "at spec", 400MHz DDR, 5:6, you're asking for trouble!
If the memory has a little headroom left over, you'll make a little progress
w/ the FSB overclock. If not, the FSB overclock will die a quick death. It
sounds to me like this latter scenario is the problem

Run CPUZ and then click the about tab and then click on memory SPD. You

can
find it here.
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Ok, so CPUZ says Corsair DDR-SDRAM PC2700 - 512MB
for each DIMM(#1 and #2)
it also says Frequency 166Mhz

is it reporting PC2700 because it is inferring that from the Frequency?
ie: if i changed the Frequency in the BIOS to 200Mhz, would CPUZ tell me it
was PC3200?

The reason I ask is that I bought (and paid for) PC3200 from newegg a
couple years ago.. this makes me nervous that it is reporting the PC2700
when I had bought PC3200 :P

Thanks,

CPUZ reads the info put into the memory from the manufacturer. If it says
it's PC2700, it probably is. Plus, PC3200 wasn't around a couple years ago.

Well, that sucks.

Not only did I choose PC3200 from newegg when I ordered it (i still have the
invoice)
It even has a label on the physical memory that says:
"CMX512-3200C2-XMS3202v1.1"

and this is from the newegg invoice: (dated October 3rd, 2002):

suck, suck, suck.

I really wouldn't take any notice at all of what CPUz says. All it is doing
is reading what's in the ram's SPD chip. The SPD can be programmed with any
information the manufacturer wants to put in there and it can be very
misleading. Sometimes they are more concerned with making sure the memory
will run when an inexperienced user just selects the "by spd" timings in the
bios. So they want to make sure the SPD numbers are nice and conservative.

I have 2 sticks of OCZ PC3500 ram. One of them says it is 3200 and the
other says it is 2700. But both will run 235 MHz no problems at all.

What voltage are you trying to run your ram at? Lots of memory needs more
volts than you think it might. I would try setting it at 2.7v or even 2.8v
and then see how it runs. And don't be too aggressive with the timings to
start with. Try 11-3-3 cas2 or 11-3-3 Cas2.5 and see how you get on.

If the sticks won't do 200MHz at 11-3-3 Cas2.5 at 2.7v, then I would say you
have a problem.

Chip.

All in all it is still very strange for the mixed readings with Corsair
memory. A generic brand maybe, but not Corsair. I wouldn't trust what OCZ
registers their sticks at either. He mentions the label on the "physical
memory". I've never taken the heatspreaders off my XMS so I don't know if
there is a sticker on that too. I also have sticks that aren't identical.
See below. I dunno, maybe he's got PC3200 heatspreaders on PC2700 memory
