Some of the PC3200 Corsair memory is 8-3-3-3 at 200Mhz. For example:

Here's your memory (
http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/...512-3200c2.pdf ),

says
nothing about PC2700, so I don't know where that's coming from. Suppose

to
run 200MHz clock, 2.5-3-3-6 on AMD, a little faster on Intel (2-3-3-6). I
assume this is the SPD results during config.

So there's no reason you shouldn't be able to run the Athlon (@ 166MHz
clock) in sync (1:1) w/ your memory (underclocked @ 166MHz). Now, as you
increase the CPU FSB, are you saying you are getting memory errors?? I
assume the CPU FSB will OC even a little, so it would surprise me to see
errors w/ even 167MHz (1:1).

What I'm wondering is whether maybe you're actually trying to run async
(e.g., 5:6, 166 / 5 * 6 = 200, not even sure this is possible w/ NForce2
chipset, just speculating), so therefore everytime you OC the CPU FSB,
you're also overclocking the memory! If the memory is already tapped out

at
PC3200 (200MHz clock), especially if perhaps you're trying to run 2-3-3-6
(not the certified 2.5.-3-3-6), then perhaps it just dies at even a hint
above 200MHz clock.

I'm just speculating, but it's my guess this is what you're trying to do.
Remember, every time you OC the CPU FSB, the memory is OC'd too! That's

why
the proper thing to do w/ this CPU and memory is run 1:1! You're trying

to
OC the FSB, but you don't want the memory holding you back. If you insist
on running the memory "at spec", 400MHz DDR, 5:6, you're asking for

trouble!
If the memory has a little headroom left over, you'll make a little

progress
w/ the FSB overclock. If not, the FSB overclock will die a quick death.

It
sounds to me like this latter scenario is the problem

I have a quick question about my memory and setup in terms of

overclocking..

I purchased Corsair PC3200 memory with the expectation that it can run

at
400mhz, but it seems to fail in this ambition (i get a memory error in

the
bios, have to reboot the machine). When I when I try to overclock the

FSB
to 400Mhz in the bios (anything over 167) I get memory errors...

motherboard: A7N8X 2.0 (which should run at 400mhz ..)
cpu: AthlonXP 2600+ 333

SiSoftware Sandra reports my memory as the following (I have 2x512mb):

Memory Module 1 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)
Memory Module 2 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)

I don't understand why it says "PC2700" in there at the end, but '3200'

in
the beginning. When I bought this memory it was listed as PC3200. And

it
says it is limited to 167MHz, which also seems to be the barrier to the

BIOS
when I try to overclock.. (i can't get it higher than 333mhz fsb)

any ideas as to what my problem is?

Thanks very much

I gues I should have included the example:

This should not show up as C2, however.

Hmm..., I don't use Corsair myself, but 3-3-3-8 is considered "extreme" for
PC3200?! Heck, I wouldn't even consider this acceptable for PC3500. And
$155 for only 512MB of it, to boot. The whole DDR scene is out of control,
pricing is almost mindless, just glad I don't need it.

My goodness, I bought Kingston HyperX KHX3200AK2, 1GB (2 x 512), 2-3-2-6-1
(runs 2-3-2-5-1 up to 218MHz), for $176 back in late Dec '03 (
http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/part...=KHX3200AK2/1G )
.. And only 10 days ago, you could have picked up Kingston HyperX PC4000,
1GB, for $233, promo'd by Kingston direct. Today, that same PC4000 is $325!
On sale no less. (
http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/part...o=KHX4000K2/1G )

This Corsair seems to be a *major* ripoff, if you ask me, even w/ today's
DDR prices.

For a start it runs at 200MHz DDR, NOT 400MHz. If you must, call it DDR400,
but under no circumstances should 400 and MHz be used to describe PC3200.

FSB is NOT 400MHz, it will be 166MHz DDR for the 2600+, you should be able
to overclock it to 200MHz (DDR400), but you may have to reduce your
multiplier. The 2600+ 333FSB (166MHz DDR) has a default multiplier of 12.5
giving a CPU speed of 2.083GHz, if you take that to 200MHz, you'll have
12.5*200 == 2.5GHz, which is unlikely to work without some serious luck and
a lot of voltage (and therefore cooling).

motherboard: A7N8X 2.0 (which should run at 400mhz ..)
cpu: AthlonXP 2600+ 333

OK, so you can at least attempt to run at say, 200MHz * 10 (for now) with
memory in synch (100% of FSB). Use 2.7V or even 2.8V for VDimm and up the
CPU voltage 0.1V (assuming your DIODE temperatures are sane - 60° under
load - even that could be considered fairly high)

SiSoftware Sandra reports my memory as the following (I have 2x512mb):

Memory Module 1 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)
Memory Module 2 : Corsair CMX512-3200C2 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC2700U-233-700 (CL2.5 up to 167MHz) (CL2 up to 167MHz)

I purchased some TwinX1024-3200LL (rated a bit quicker than yours) and
Sandra says:

Mainboard
Manufacturer : ASUSTeK Computer INC.
MP Support : No
Model : A7N8X2.0
Version : REV 2.xx

Memory Module(s)
Memory Module 1 : Corsair CMX512-3200LL 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC3200U-232-600 (CL2 up to 200MHz)
Memory Module 2 : Corsair CMX512-3200LL 512MB 16x(32Mx8) DDR-SDRAM
PC3200U-232-600 (CL2 up to 200MHz)

Which consistently says PC3200 throughout.

I prefer to use Aida32, which reports basically the same thing.

I don't understand why it says "PC2700" in there at the end, but '3200' in
the beginning. When I bought this memory it was listed as PC3200. And it
says it is limited to 167MHz, which also seems to be the barrier to the
BIOS when I try to overclock.. (i can't get it higher than 333mhz fsb)

It looks like the first bit (where it says PC3200) is the name of the
module. The second bit (where is says PC2700) is implied from the SPD speed
info - since yours says 2.5 at 167MHz (which should likely read 200MHz),
it's implied that the fastest rated speed is PC2700. The bit that says CL2
to 167MHz is likely a second setting for PC2700.

Corsair had some SPD problems on their earlier modules, I wouldn't worry
about it.

any ideas as to what my problem is?

Most likely incorrect settings in the BIOS, set it up as I described, but
instead of going straight from 166MHz to 200MHz, try 180, then 190, then
195, then 200.

Ensure that you start with a multiplier of 10, FSB of 166MHz, and memory at
100% of FSB. Then up the FSB to 180 and check stability, then 190 etc.

At signs of instability in memtest86, up VDimm a notch and try again (not
above 2.8V, assuming you have heatspreaders). Once memtest86 is stable,
ensure stability in Windows using Prime95 torture test. At signs of
instability in Prime95, up Vcore a tad. Keep an eye on Diode temps using
something like MBM5. I like to keep temps below 70°C at an absolute
maximum, after say 5 minutes of Prime95. If they are not under that
temperature, do NOT up Vcore.

For more info, see my FAQ, although I think I have actually covered more
here, than there. :-p
