Default DVD Identifier - wirting speed in brackets

Bought a DVD burner recently (a Gigabyte W0404) and tried two brands
of DVD-R media. One of them (Sonix) produced 100% failure (4 discs,
all failed at "power calibration"). The other brand (ProPlayer) was
ok. So I went out and bought some JVC & Ridata discs. However, the JVC
also failed at 2X writing speed (towards the end of a 4GB burn).

When checked with DVD Identifier v3.2, these are the findings :

1. Sonix DVD-R - mfg = "not listed". Writing speed = 1x-2x-(4x)
2. JVC DVD-R - mfg = MXL RG01. Writing speed = 1x-(2x)
3. Ridata DVD-R - mfg = RITEK000. Writing speed = 2x-4x
4. Ridata DVD+R - mfg = RICOHJPB. Writing speed = 2.4X

My questions :

a) for the Sonix, did it fail because the burner couldn't recognise
the media manufacturer, hence the need to perform power calibration?

b) what is the meaning of writing speed in brackets?

c) the Ridata DVD+R is supposed to be produced by Ritek (the dealer
said so). Why does it show Ricoh? Is it an indication of a fake ID?

TIA.

Please recognize: the program shows what the manufacturer records on the
disc, not what the package or the salesman says.

a) It performs power calibration because each such drive (CD or DVD)
does so to determine the appropriate setting for that disc. The failure
may be due to a bad disc, to a bad line of discs or to something else.
Without the error message, we can say little more than that.

b) Ask Arrowkey.

c) Invite the dealer to go back to peddling vacuum cleaners. The odds
that Ritek would claim their discs to be Ricoh are vanishingly small.
