Default New "best" mass-market blanks?

Up to now the standard recommendation for a no-worry blank has been TY,
usually branded as Fuji in the U.S. They even have/had frequent rebats,
if not of the "free-after" kind.

If all the buzz here is to be believed, no more. TY is going to the
professional bulk market, Fuji is branding inferior (ProDisc?) Taiwanese
blanks.

Which leaves open the question, whose is the new "best". the one most
everybody can agree is buyable without worry?

Somebody who also offers an occasional rebate would be nice too. I
suspect that the overall quality of blank CDRs has gone up considerably in
the last couple of years simply becsause it's a "mature" market where
technical needs are now better understood and resellers (since nobody
seems to sell direct to the mass market) have learned that they need to
demand a minimum level of quality.

If you could find a brand of discs that were consistently from Ritek, they
would probably be decent - the error rates for high-speed (52X) burning on
current Ritek discs seem as good or better than TY. I think Maxell is at
least usually Ritek..

Hmmm... I've not found Ritek discs particularly reliable - the last
batch I bought a few months ago has produced a few coasters. T-Y discs
have been far more reliable.

Cheers.

TDK 52x is usually, if not always, RitekTG. The 48x is either Ritek or CMC.
The Ritek spindles are easy to recognize with the gray base and the rounded
top cover lip.
Some people have used lesser quality Ritek and had problems. Maxell has use
the lesser quality RitekG, but the 48x all seems to be RitekTG and should be
very good.

Couldn't get to version 2.x so got 3.x which doesn't give any dye info,
just a maker. I used to have a program that gave a lot more info but
I've lost it and can't remember its name!

Hey Brendan,

If all the buzz here is to be believed, no more. TY is going to the

professional bulk market, Fuji is branding inferior (ProDisc?) Taiwanese
blanks.

ProDisc is actually pretty good. And Fuji must feel the same, or otherwise
they wouldn't have went with them after TY.

Not all Taiwanese factories put out crap discs. Even CMC is doing better in
their production process nowadays.

The only Taiwanese blanks I've ever had real problems with were the ones
made by SeanTram (branded as ArtsMedia). I don't even know if they still
exist. If they don't, then good riddance to bad rubbish...lol.

Later,
- Mitch
