Default 8knxp--SATA raid alert--be SURE to download raid drivers for xp new install before you begin!

i spent the WEEKEND installing a brand new system with an 8knxp, using
2 new barracudas in a raid 0 array. other mobo manufacturers (eg,
msi) include the floppy you will absolutely need to successfully
install XP, when prompted to do so by the infamous F6 prompt. (Don't
blink!--whoops, it's gone!)

without using another computer in my house (which had no floppy) i had
to go to unbelievable contortions to install one hd, install xp, make
the floppy from intel's website (or gigabyte's) and then start all
over.

Shame on gigabyte for not including those floppies (you'll need
similar ones if you are using the SIs or gigaraid raid. Do they read
these newsgroups?

Plus, their directions were less than crystal. you would think that a
premium mobo like this would have the floppies and better directions.
I have built 10 systems, and never had this kind of hassle.

so let's be careful out there!

RESEARCH!!...before you buy hardware or plan a box, download everything in
advance, you NEVER use the drivers on the utilities CD as they are always
out of date. Make your floppies before you even take apart the old PC.

Email them and suggest it to them for a future board release.

hardly--the manual is exeedingly unclear and, as far as the INTEL raid
goes, says NOTHING about using a floppy. so who didn't read the
manual? the gigaraid and sis manuals do reference floppies; not the
master manual for the board itself.

i'm trying to be helpful. snotty flames add nothing.

Better still,

Get MS to support loading drivers from other than floppy's.
IE CD.
Get the drivers into the next XP service pack when WHQL'd.
Ok, not easy for new chipsets...
M/b manufacturers could better coordinate driver / bios versions with
clearer statements on dependancies.

Flames don't help. A considerable number of people have had *real* trouble
with F6 driver installs on numerous m/b's with on at least one occasion the
driver files not being laid out correctly. This is not just a Gigabyte
problem...

I installed Win XP Pro on a RAID 0 SATA configuration, but I was savvy
enough to look for the drivers, make sure I had the latest drivers , put
them on a floppy and do the install without problems.

But...

What does the person do if he's building his only PC, and doesn't have
another one handy to use to either download the files or copy them from the
floppy??

I think the manufacture's should supply 'installation critical ' drivers on
a floppy for just that reason.
