Default A dying Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA HDD?

Hi!

I was just watching my recorded television/TV shows and then my video
froze. My old updated Windows XP Pro. SP3's taskbar showed several
balloons showing many write delays ($MFT) on my 500 GB Seagate SATA HDD
on all of its partitions/drives (D:, G:, etc.)! My Windows started
pausing and freezing too. I had to force a shutdown (didn't fully finish
it by itself -- so I had to use my computer's power button). BIOS and
CMOS looked OK to me. I turned off my PC, and checked inside and wiggled
the HDD SATA cables that I could touch, and they looked OK (nothing
lose) to me. I booted back to Windows without problems, and ran Smartctl
on that drive. Its results looked bad to me?

What do you think? I only had this HDD since 12/27/2008. IIRC, this one
had the firmware bug and I was able to patch/upgrade when it was
announced back then. Does this sound like a dying HDD?

I will run a full long SMART test later tonight (it will take about two
hours). Maybe that's why I am having hard computer lockups because of
this?

Hi Ant,

my impression is that you have a somehow unwritable sector
in some fileystem used area, as all the errors in the log
are aborted writes. Unwritable is rare and may
be a servo defect. I think this drive may still be fine
except for that one sector. The results of the long
SMART selftest should tell.

I don't see anything that would point to cabeling or
power problems.

What do you think? I only had this HDD since 12/27/2008. IIRC, this one
had the firmware bug and I was able to patch/upgrade when it was
announced back then. Does this sound like a dying HDD?

I will run a full long SMART test later tonight (it will take about two
hours). Maybe that's why I am having hard computer lockups because of
this?

Default A dying Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA HDD?

Hmm!

After rebooting back to Windows, it was fine. I used the HDD for about
15 minutes or so, and then HDD vanished as I was running the latest just
installed SeaTools for Windows during its "Scanning for supported
drives, please wait" dialog box. However, Windows XP Pro. SP3 did not
give me a write delay error like the first time. I had to shut down and
reboot Windows to bring back the vanished HDD. I checked its SMART
results, but it looked the same. I reran that SeaTools twice and no
problems. I also ran its short SMART test and saw no problems.

I also downloaded the bootable DOS (SeaToolsDOS223ALL.iso) off a burned
CD-RW and ran its short and long SMART, and aocustic tests. All passed.
I didn't touch its advanced tests since they don't seem revelant to what
I need to test (erase/format?).

FYI, I have the latest firmware (SD1A) so the HDD was upgraded a few
years ago.

So you think an unwriteable sector? Should I do a chkdsk /f /r on all
partitions/drives (D:, G:, H:, and I on that problematic 500 GB SATA
HDD? Or is there a faster and easier way to do all in one request? I did
a couple chkdsk with no special parameters (e.g., chkdsk g and they
found no problems.

I am going to try GsmartControl's full test now while I go AFK for a
couple hours...

Or maybe it's just a bad SATA cable?

Hi Ant,

my impression is that you have a somehow unwritable sector
in some fileystem used area, as all the errors in the log
are aborted writes. Unwritable is rare and may
be a servo defect. I think this drive may still be fine
except for that one sector. The results of the long
SMART selftest should tell.

I don't see anything that would point to cabeling or
power problems.

No need for AFK, the SMART long test runs in background, its result
appears later in the self-test log.

For a quick test use a SMART selective test which includes the sector
3277184 listed in the error log. For example this command tests the
first ~5GB of the disk: smartctl -t select,0-9999999 ...

Or maybe it's just a bad SATA cable?

Examine SATA Phy Event Counters (smartctl -l sataphy ...). If all error
counters are 0, cable should be OK.

Default A dying Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA HDD?

Ant wrote

Hi!

Lo!!

I was just watching my recorded television/TV shows and then my video froze. My old updated Windows XP Pro. SP3's
taskbar showed several balloons showing many write delays ($MFT) on my 500 GB Seagate SATA HDD on all of its
partitions/drives (D:, G:, etc.)! My Windows started pausing and freezing too. I had to force a shutdown (didn't fully
finish it by itself -- so I had to use my computer's power button). BIOS and CMOS looked OK to me. I turned off my PC,
and checked inside and wiggled the HDD SATA cables that I could touch, and they looked OK (nothing lose) to me. I
booted back to Windows without problems, and ran Smartctl on that drive. Its results looked bad to me?

Yep, she's dying, Jim. You into necrophilia ?

I only had this HDD since 12/27/2008.

That was likely one of the drives with a 5 year warranty.

You may or may not just manage a warranty claim if it had a 3 year
warranty if that date is the date you bought it from a reputable retailler.

IIRC, this one had the firmware bug and I was able to patch/upgrade when it was announced back then. Does this sound
like a dying HDD?

Yep, the realllocated sector number is much too high.

I will run a full long SMART test later tonight (it will take about two hours). Maybe that's why I am having hard
computer lockups because of this?

Yep.

Default A dying Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA HDD?

Ant wrote:

I am actually not sure how a write can fail, but that is what the
error-log says. It is possible that ist does not get the fine
positioning it needs for writes due to some damaged servo-tracks.
(Servo tracjs are very short tracks scattered over the disk surface
and between the data-tracks that serve to tell the disk where exactly
the heads are). On reading, the disk can just try even if positioning
is not perfect. On writing, it will not as that could destroy
neighbouring tracks as well.

I am going to try GsmartControl's full test now while I go AFK for a
couple hours...

Or maybe it's just a bad SATA cable?

No. That would result in DMA-CRC errors or something like it.
These are definitely write errors after the data and command
was transferred correctly to the disk. This also means it is
the disk, not some other component, except maybe a PSU giving
bad 12V and thereby causing positioning problems, or vibration,
is the cause of the problem.

Now if this was a seeking problem (caused by defective disk,
PSU uir by vibration), I would expect a rather high rate
of seek errors. As by fzabkar's excellent explanation here

http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracu...CC/td-p/122382

this seems not to be the case.

I think for a real diagnosis you might have to do a
overwrite with verify test.

HDDSentinel offers one non-destructive option for that,
namely the "refresh data" test. I would not run it without
complete backup though. Depending on how much your time is
worth to you, the most efficient option may be to toss this
drive.

Hi Ant,

my impression is that you have a somehow unwritable sector
in some fileystem used area, as all the errors in the log
are aborted writes.

I will run a full long SMART test later tonight (it will take about two
hours). Maybe that's why I am having hard computer lockups because of
this?

No need for AFK, the SMART long test runs in background, its result
appears later in the self-test log.

Doesn't the test slow down if I use the HDD(s) and computer? I had other
things to do though like sleep.

For a quick test use a SMART selective test which includes the sector
3277184 listed in the error log. For example this command tests the
first ~5GB of the disk: smartctl -t select,0-9999999 ...

So, when do I check its results? It didn't tell me how long this will

Or maybe it's just a bad SATA cable?

Examine SATA Phy Event Counters (smartctl -l sataphy ...). If all error
counters are 0, cable should be OK.

I think for a real diagnosis you might have to do a

HDDSentinel offers one non-destructive option for that,
namely the "refresh data" test. I would not run it without
complete backup though. Depending on how much your time is
worth to you, the most efficient option may be to toss this
drive.

How long would it take? I used about 342 GB out of my about 500 GB HDD.
Shoot, I didn't know I used that much disk space and I am going to need
to find a huge HDD/SSD that is big as that or bigger.

Default A dying Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB SATA HDD?

Just a small update. I have not seen any more HDD disconnections and no
new SMART errors since I last posted with results. Things are calmed for
now?

Ugh, what a bad timing with the higher prices of HDDs and SSDs are still
costly for big sizes (just bought a 115 GB for my new Linux/Debian box).
I am going to need find a new/refurbished 7200 RPM SATA 500 GB or bigger
SSD (does it work well in XP Pro. SP3?)/HDD too that isn't so expensive.

FYI from more SMART tests in a Seagate's bootable CD-RW and in Windows
with GSmartControl's tests (long/full and people's requests from cmd.exe
lines [not sure if that test first 5 GB is done?]:

FYI, I have the latest firmware (SD1A) so the HDD was upgraded a few
years ago.

I will run a full long SMART test later tonight (it will take about two
hours). Maybe that's why I am having hard computer lockups because of
this?
