Default New Dimension order

I ordered a new Dell Today. I have a Dimension XPS T450, Windows98se, that I bought
10 years ago. I was down to 394 mb, and with the help of the Windows 98 general help
group, I am up to 3.24GB. But it took almost 5 days.
So it's time for the new. Please look this over and see if it will be relatively
problem free. I am thinking of ordering a 'Seagate Free Agent Pro USB/Hard e
SATA/FireWire external hard drive(750GB) to transfer my data and store data.' I am
going to do it myself.

Default New Dimension order

i think it is excessive for someone that has been content with using a ten
year old pc to spend $2,400 for a replacement that does not even include a
monitor. i assure you that there is no new computer that is going to last
you ten years or is built as well as the t450 was. besides, the current xps
(no relation to the old other than the three letters) is physically huge.
here's what i would suggest...
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...pdeffe&s= bsd
upgrade to the e4600 for $49. xp pro for $99 (if you really need pro, which
i highly doubt, home is fine), 250gb for $25, dvdrw for $10, and a speaker
bar that clips on the bottom edge of the monitor for $29 and you total is
$711 and that includes a monitor.

I have an XPS Gen 4 here, acquired from a downsized company. I have been trying
to move it, and it is darn heavy. And very big. Very very very different than
the old timey XPS T450.

The OP might find something very nice among the Optiplex or Precision lines in
Dell Small and Medium Business, with very good speed, smaller chassis, lower
price and very respectable product quality.

The OP is to be congratulated for his persistence in ignoring the siren songs of
computer ads over the years, and plugging along with the T450. Economists will
say that such resistance to buying is what is wrong with the US economy. We
must spend spend SPEND! Oh, you day you don't have any money? No problem.

Default New Dimension order

I cancelled the order Ben. I do thousands of pictures and would like to do video's. I
was working (out of the house) 54 hours a week and still managed to use up all my
disc space on the old 450.

If I understand what you are saying, technology is changing so fast that I will need
a different computer in 5 years? I thought there was enough expansion room in the
630 to expand. I got everything top of the line (and by the way there was a 22"
monitor with built in camera and mic. in that price).

You think a cheaper computer will serve me well? Ginny

Default New Dimension order

You must be kidding. What am going to do with that machine you put together? Where is
the room for expansion? Where are the 2 dvd/cdrw drives, $500 is a very nice price
but you get what you pay for. How do you know that the xps is not as good as the
xpst, if this is the kind of machine you use.

i think it is excessive for someone that has been content with using a ten
year old pc to spend $2,400 for a replacement that does not even include a
monitor. i assure you that there is no new computer that is going to last
you ten years or is built as well as the t450 was. besides, the current xps

I ordered a new Dell Today. I have a Dimension XPS T450, Windows98se, that
I bought
10 years ago. I was down to 394 mb, and with the help of the Windows 98

So it's time for the new. Please look this over and see if it will be

One of the aforementioned models should do very nicely for photo and video
editing. For the most part, Dell has positioned its new XPS line for gaming,
which can tax the processor and graphics of a system to the extreme. Unless you
expect to become a gamer, the more modest Optiplex or slightly higher end
Precision models should be just fine.

It's not so much that the HARDWARE technology is changing. In fact, I think
that the processor power requirements of 99% of the people have more or less
plateaued, and effectively there is little perceived difference in computing
speed between a even medium range 3-year old computer and today's new stuff. The
only difference is that today we have dual core and quad core processors and
other technology that enable systems to consume less power. But the average
person won't even begin to appreciate what a quad core system can do, because
desktop software does not yet use four processors very effectively.

The old axiom that software sells a system is as true today as it ever was. The
need to use various and sundry application software is what drives the sales (or
at least it does among intelligent folk, never mind the naive uninformed buyer),
not the operating system (See: Windows Vista) or the hardware itself.

Ginny

No problem.

Christopher, Thank you for pointing out how huge the xps 630 is. The measurements are
massive! I cancelled it but I need a bit more than what you put together for me.
Thank you for the time you put in to it.

Default New Dimension order

Why does everyone think there is no monitor?? I ordered a 22" flat screen with built
in camera and mic., and it is included in the price. Also 4 years of service and dual
dvd/cd rw. But, Chris was right, the machine is physically massive. I work on a
22"wide conference table and it is 22" deep, 19" high and 8" wide. I am so glad I
posted here. Maybe we can get something put together for me.

$2,500 and no monitor?

You must be kidding. What am going to do with that machine you put
together? Where is
the room for expansion? Where are the 2 dvd/cdrw drives, $500 is a very
nice price
but you get what you pay for. How do you know that the xps is not as good
as the
xpst, if this is the kind of machine you use.

i think it is excessive for someone that has been content with using a
ten
year old pc to spend $2,400 for a replacement that does not even include
a
monitor. i assure you that there is no new computer that is going to
last
you ten years or is built as well as the t450 was. besides, the current
xps
(no relation to the old other than the three letters) is physically huge.
here's what i would suggest...

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...pdeffe&s= bsd
upgrade to the e4600 for $49. xp pro for $99 (if you really need pro,
which
i highly doubt, home is fine), 250gb for $25, dvdrw for $10, and a
speaker
bar that clips on the bottom edge of the monitor for $29 and you total is
$711 and that includes a monitor.

I ordered a new Dell Today. I have a Dimension XPS T450, Windows98se,
that
I bought
10 years ago. I was down to 394 mb, and with the help of the Windows 98
general help
group, I am up to 3.24GB. But it took almost 5 days.
So it's time for the new. Please look this over and see if it will be
relatively
problem free. I am thinking of ordering a 'Seagate Free Agent Pro
USB/Hard
e
SATA/FireWire external hard drive(750GB) to transfer my data and store
data.' I am
going to do it myself.

Default New Dimension order

ginny, sorry that i bothered to try to help you. you ask about comment of
your choice of system for replacing a 10 year old machine that you still use
without complaint, you offer no insight on your intended future use so one
can only assume that your needs are quite basic, and you cough up a top of
the line system configuration that lacks a monitor (hence why everyone
thinks that there was no monitor included in your configuration) and fish
for comments. you do the math. good luck.
