Default emergency question

Hi:

I have an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz. processor on an Asus A7M266 motherboard and it
seems I have something of an emergency. A couple of hours ago the weather
service issued a tornado warning for the area. In the midst of getting
things together there was a very brief power outage but I had the computer
plugged into a backup power unit and my computer stayed on. I decided to
shut it down and head for the basement, after saving some files I was
working on and checking an internet site (the point being the computer was
working fine when I shut it down). So, after coming back from the basement
I turned on the power supply and pressed the button to turn on the computer
and nothing happened. I mean, absolutely nothing. Dead. I tried various
things like plugging the power directly into the wall outlet, switching the
power on and off at the back, and even giving it a good whack on the side.
No response.

So my question is, given that the thing was working fine when I shut down
what have I fried that I'd get nary a flicker when I press the on button?
Have I toasted the motherboard, or might it just be a switch of some sort?
Any ideas?

I'm using an old backup computer in the mean time, but need my main computer
for my livelihood... so it's important I get the thing up and running.

Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

Never mind. It was a mechanical problem with the switch, or rather with the
plastic button that was supposed to depress the switch. For some reason it
wasn't going in far enough to trigger the switch. Odd that it would wait
until all this storm electrical activity to manifest a simple physical
problem. Whew! Glad it wasn't something serious.

Did you try a good whack on the other side, maybe a boot across the floor.
If that doesn't work maybe try a drop from a third story window. You have a
power supply problem and will have to diagnose it. Possibly swap out the
PS...
