Pioneer OEM vs. Retail (A08XLB)
Hi,
Saw an anandtech review of the Pioneer. Came out sterling. But he was testing the OEM version (a bit less pricey overall) and I am asking if there is a large diff between OEM and RETAIL for this particular Drive. And can one upgrade firmware on the OEM? Have seen some that will not. Thanks very much. |

Thanks very much. http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/compute.../firmware.html Yes, you can update the OEM - just make sure you do not apply Retail XL firmware to a non-XL drive. As I understand it, there are normally 4 versions - thoughgh the may not all be available for this drive. 1. DVR-108 - OEM DRIVE 2. A08 - Retail packed, SAME DRIVE 3. A08XLA - White 4. A08XLB - Black The XL version has some hardware and firmware differences relating to the quiet drive functions, but should perform about the same There are also "hacked firmwares" around, whic make the drive RPC-1 (then you need a software region killer to fully defeat region control), and to apply "nX4all" tweaks, allowing you to TRY (but not neccessarily succeed) to burn any media at any speed. -- I may be dozzzy, but take the ZZZ's out to mail me http://www.junkroom.freeserve.co.uk/jvc2080.htm - 2x2x24 CD-RW troubles If you drop a cactus, don't try to catch it! |
