Default Replacing an OEM Mobo...

Can anyone comment on the compatibility of replacing the OEM hard
drive with a 250 GB WDC WD2500BB 55GUC0 Rev. 08.02D08 hard drive?

Thanks!

Given the disparity in price, performance, and/or capacity
between the smaller PATA drives and current generation SATA
alternatives, I'd be tempted to just buy a $15 PCI SATA
controller card and a 500GB to 1TB SATA drive instead.
That's assuming you have a free PCI slot.

That way you get modern performance, much more capacity, no
issues of whether the mainboard recognizes the capacity
because the controller card handles that, and should the
rest of the system be replaced someday it would be more
appropriate to have the SATA drive rather than PATA.

Good suggestion. One thing to be aware of if Jimmy decides to re-install
his OS (assuming windows XP) onto the new drive is to make sure he has
drivers for the SATA controller card on floppy before the process in
case the XP installation routine needs the drivers to recognise the card
in order to access the drive.

Uhh, then why didn't you just unplug the present drive, plug
in the replacement and see if it worked out?
