A customer of mine with a brand new Vostro discovered her OE spell checker
only supports French. Come to find out, this is because her new Dell also
has Office 2007, which breaks the OE spell checker (which actually runs off
of the MS Office engine):

spell checker."

That article refers to an upgrade?
Was Office upgraded or was Office 2007 a Clean Installation?

I also assume the operating system is Windows XP or possibly Windows
Server 2003.

Very interesting. I just got a new Vista box and am finding out (the
hard way?) that Windows Mail already has three features missing that
OE had. Now I hear that Office 2007 breaks spell checker in Windows
Mail.

Hmmm...guess I'll just have to install Office 2002 on the Vista box.

One of my biggest gripes is that although I am the Administrator (the
only user, besides a Guest account which is turned off), I'm not
really the big cheese administrator. Heck, it shows in the Users
Account panel that I am the Administrator.

For instance, when I tried to edit my hosts file, Vista wouldn't allow
this. No, no. Rather than go to the trouble of making myself THE
Administrator with write permission, I had to right click on the
Notepad shortcut, select "Run as administrator", navigate to the hosts
file, and then edit and save.

I also miss the display name feature, the Outlook Bar, and I don't
care for the way the To: field drop down includes everyone you've ever
entered an email addy for, rather than just those in your contact list
(address book). Windows Mail reminds me of Outlook....but I'd never
go for Windows Live Mail.

That article applies to Outlook Express, not Windows Mail.
The spell checker for Windows Mail works fine for me, Windows Vista
Ultimate, Office Ultimate 2007.

That we me, Boris, that wrote, "Now I hear that ...".

I should have realized that a Vostro most likely came with XP.

Wow, thanks for posting that. Unbelievable. Here's some text from
the knowledge base article:

If you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system, you no longer have
spell checking capabilities in some languages when you use Outlook
Express 6.0.

These files are replaced with newer versions that are included in the
2007 Office system. The new files are incompatible with Outlook
Express.

There are a variety of third-party free spell-checking programs
available on the Internet. You can learn about available programs by
visiting the Microsoft Communities site. This site lets you obtain
advice from other users and from Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals
(MVPs).

Good to hear from a MS MVP.

My uncle uses Thunderbird and likes it.
