T2865 EMAchine Starts by itself
Thank you Ralph. It has nothing to do with the monitor. It does tell
me that there is no power or it has been put in save mode, but the monitor is fine. When I plug the power cord in the back to the power supply the psu & CPU fans go on and nothing else. The harddrive does not initialize itself. Thanks Larry |

I have tried it in both the power strips and the wall outlets. It
happens both places. I don't think it's the wiring because everything else works fine in the house. The gateways are old the emachine is only a few years old but ... emachines being what they are. I'm going to get a PSU from radio shack today after work and try it. I'll let you know. Thanks for all your help Larry |

scoobadave asked a question :
My Father-in-Laws machine just did this. I am about to replace the mother board as a new power supply was not the culprit! What did you find out?? scoobadave, I had one computer that started this procedure several years ago, I could turn it off via windows shutdown, or holding the power button in for about 4 seconds, and the computer would stay in the off state. I could restart the computer by pressing the power button, or turning the surge protector off, and then back on. I switched the power supply to test, I upgraded the bios, but did not change the motherboard as it was almost as expensive as a new e-machine after rebate. The computer is now next door, and its still has the problem start-up problem, but the surge protectore being used as the on switch was far less expensive than a replacement motherboard. However, a father-in-law may require a new motherboard, but take pause and look at the MB replacement cost of an older slower model compared to a newer more powerful refurbished unit (maybe a new dell $250 unit). Do not forget to look at the auction websites, sometime they can be a life saver with price... Also, remember windows is oem, and could be married to the motherboard - JR the postman |

Given Microsoft's approach in dealing with XP and brand-name manufacturers, the
odds are close to 100% that the version of Windows on an eMachine computer is tied to the motherboard BIOS. However, there is some possibility that a phone call to Microsoft will work to allow Windows to be activated again with a non-Emachine replacement motherboard. I did this some months ago for a replacement of a Compaq motherboard for a client. But, you never know with Micro$oft, which continually tightens up its Window$ activation/authentication policies to discourage all those nasty software pirates who are stealing oodles of money from Billy Gate$ and $teveie Ballmer... Well guys I just replaced the motherboard and while the machine does
not come on as soon as I plug in the power, it doesnt go off either! I found a motherboard/cpu replacement for 100.00 (same as I took out). The cost was not the factor until I get into replacing the machine. the system power comes on, I get the HDD light, the Power LED, but nothing on the screen, no beeping. I have tried a new memory module, a different harddrive (I have my IT guy giving me stuff to test with).. The really peculiar thing is - even though I am showing power to the CD/DVD drive - pushing the eject button on these devices will not allow them to open. I completely baffled. Scoobie I got the same problems as you. The DVD RW drive will not open
even though the light is on. So you replaced both PSU and motherboard and it is still the same? Larry |

Larry,
The only thing I have not replaced in this PC is the CASE itself! Unfortunately I dont have a case to try to see if there is a short somewhere from the switch/case. I have replaced everything else. I was able to get the CD and DVD drives to open. I put a volt meter and the power supply is putting out the correct power! Have you tried contacting eMachines yet? Because that is my next step or I am going to have him buy a barebones system and I am going to build him one using the components from this system (minus MB and maybe processor). Let me know!!! The graphics card is good, HD is good. Anybody got any idea why this happens and what to check? This is known as AC power recovery. It's a relitiavely normal thing. Don't worry about it. |
