T2865 EMAchine Starts by itself
I have a T2865 Emachine that I moved from one location to another.
When I plug in the power cord it starts without me pushing the start button. And nothing comes up on the screen? The graphics card is good, HD is good. Anybody got any idea why this happens and what to check? Thanks Larry |

Larry,
It's likely that something came loose when the system was moved. Open up the case. Make sure that any add-in cards are properly seated in their slots. Same with memory... I did Ben. I cleaned it all out. Took the PS cover off blew it out.
reseated the memory, checked all connections put a new battery in cleared the cmos. I got two gateways that have done the same thing in the past. If I unplug them and leave them like that for awhile when I plug them back in they start up when I plug the power cord in without having to hit the on/off button. On the gateways I just remove the cover and wiggle the wires and it works. The emachine no dice. Everytime I plug the power cord in it starts by itself but will not boot up, nothing on the monitor screen. Larry |

Larry,
Is the CPU seated in its socket? Usually, a computer just starting up all by itself when plugged in is a symptom of a memory, motherboard, or CPU problem. Also, if a modern ATX power supply computer is properly set up, it powers up for a brief interval when plugged in, then shuts itself down. The next diagnostic test is to unplug power from everything except the motherboard, and to remove all add-in cards except any video card, and see what happens. If the computer powers up but does not boot up then, you need more diagnostic tools to figure out what is the problem... Ben Myers On Tue, 04 Jul 2006 00:33:25 GMT, lid (Larrybelk) wrote: I did Ben. Yes they are seated properly Ben. the gateways have done it for a long
time. Like I said I just wiggle the wires around and eventually they work right. And if I leave them plugged in without unplugging them no problem at all. it is when I unplug them and let them sit for a week or two that it happens sometimes. The emachine now that's another ballgame though. After about a 5 - 6 months of owning it my girl friend called me at work and said she was cleaning my room and when she walked by the emachine it started all by itself. I didn't believe her until it happened to me one day. Just before I unplugged it and moved it my cat walked by it and it started up? It happened 2 or 3 other times when I had unplugged the emachine and plugged it back in that the fans came on and would not shut off so I unplugged it removed the cover and wiggled the wires and it worked. This time I have done that and a complete cleaning and reseating to no avail. Thanks Larry |

Some computers can be set in the bios (cmos) to come on when the power is applied to them. I set my computers this way as I turn them and the monitor off with a power strip. As to why the monitor is blank that could be many things. Does the monitor display a setup screen or something about no signal from teh computer when you start the monitor ? Maybe it is cut off or the power plug is loose, maybe just bad. Try another monitor. |

If you intend to use it permanently, it needs to be the same form factor as the
one in the eMachines right now. If you can borrow (or buy cheaply) a working ATX-12v power supply of any size, you can rig it up for testing the motherboard without fitting the PSU inside the case... The thing that bugs me is that he's had this problem with several
difference computers. Could it be the house wiring? I assume that when the the computer was moved, it was moved to different plug. Also, is it being run through an extension cable or power strip? If so connect it directly, if not run it on an extension to another plug.
