Default K8N audio problem

I have a K8n motherboard with the Realtec AC97 audio controller, but
rear black ports doesn;t seem to wanna work. All the auido levels and
balances seem to be centered in the Windows Volume Control Panel. I have
looked in the Realtec Sound Manager AV Rack audio player for possible an
adjustment panel but found none.

I have a five speaker system with a front and rear speaker jack that
plugs into the back of the computer. The holes in the back of the
computer are lime colored for the front speakers and grey for rear
speakers but the wire plug from the speakers is black. The black hole in
the back of the computer is for side speakers. Neither of them seem to
give me any sound even when i unplug the rear speakers and plug the
front speakers into the side(black)speaker jack or rear(grey) speaker
jack. I have been into the BIOS to see if there were any controls but
there are none, except to disable or enable the AC97 drivers.

Is there any software that I can download or on my computer that I have
not found yet.

Do I need a new sound card and or speaker system?

Be sure that you are using an audio source that is actually using the
rear or side outputs. Some sound sources will only come out of the
front speakers.

Also make sure that Windows knows that you have something other than
stereo speakers installed. Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices
Speaker Settings Advanced.

I am playing a movie DVD in the DVD drive using Intervideo WinDVD since
Microsoft doesn't wanna give me a DVD program that works. WMP just gives
me a black screen. I should be getting front and rear audio from the
movie DVD(Davinci Code) since Dolby is incorperated.

Also make sure that Windows knows that you have something other than
stereo speakers installed. Control Panel Sounds and Audio Devices

I have all options enabled ie Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth etc. For
the Front, Side, Subwoofer, Center and Rear channels, I have control of
the slider button but the mute button is greyed out for these which
seems odd.

On the Realtek Audio I/O tab, when you press the play button at the bottom
of the room display, do you hear sound coming from each speaker? If not, be
sure (1) you have the correct number of speaker system selected in the
drop-down menu above the room display, (2) You have the volume control
showed in the Mixer tab Playback section and the volume is turned up, (3)
you have the wires plugged into the correct connectors on the audio panel
and are selected correctly in the options menu.

If you have done all this correctly, when you press the play button at the
bottom of the room display, each speaker will sound off when tested. THEN,
select the Dolby Pro Logic tab across the bottom of the audio panel and you
should start to hear sound coming from them as the music is decoded. (Try
music for this). OR, if you are using a 5.1 or 7.1 sound source, all will
function as advertised.

If you don't like Dolby Pro Logic, or 5.1 / 7.1 sound and want the same
sound going to the side / rear that the front speakers get, just go to the
Audio I/O tab, select 2CH Speaker system, go to each Back Panel connector
and select 'Line Out' as its source and you will be all set for stereo sound
to all speakers attached. (Which happens to be how I have my system hooked
up with my computer 2.1 speaker system and room sound system for extra sound
when I want to bug the neighbor next door.)

Very complicated, hope this works. William

well, I dont see the I/O tab in the Realtek audio player for one and
second I can't even get an audio signal out of the black rear audio port
of the sound card with the simple two speaker set I have. I can get
audio out of all four speakers including the sub if I leave the jack
connector out of where I plug everthing into the sub woofer box. but
it's hard to tell if I get decent "surround" stereo with all channels
working properly. I'm thinkin maybe this four speaker system isn't made
for this AC97 controller. I'm thinkin I should have the computer store
see if I do have a dead port or not in the sound controller.

Creative Labs has test software that plays sounds out of each speaker.
That is what I want. I want to know that each "channel" is working.
Right now my audio is so screwed. Well, it could be worse I guess. I
could have a dead AC97 controller. The AC97 software just don't do this
for me as of now. ASUS SHOULD supply this since they supply the sound
controller. My older computer has the Creative Labs in it. I think I
will take that out and use it.

Wow - You don't see the little sideways 'red speaker' in the task bar on the
bottom right of the screen? NOT THE GRAY WINDOWS SPEAKER! Do you see the
"Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager" Icon in the Control Panel? If you don't,
then you don't have a Realtek sound system on your motherboard .

The "Audio I/O" tab is the fourth one from the left across the top of the
Realtek sound manager panel. If you can't get to it, then we have no where

That is what I am trying to get you to do, use the play button at the bottom
of the room on the Audio I/O tab so we can see if you have the sound system
set up right and the speakers hooked up right. Which you obviously do not.

No, I see no red speaker in the task bar other the then grey speaker
icon in the system tray. The only icon in the Windows Control Panel for
audio is the one that says "Sound and Audio Devices" with the gray speaker.

I found the folder for Realtek Sound Manager in the Program Files x86
folder,
but seems to be empty. I am the one who built the computer. I am not sure
why the folder is empty. I do have a folder above the Sound Manager folder
that says Realtek AC97 and that program seems to be the environment
manager which has ASUS in the upper left corner of the main player
window. It does have the front and rear speaker test which I was looking
for but still can't get the rear channels to work. I had forgotten about
that little program. I might have to look for the CD that came with the
motherboard. ASUS doesn't seem to have any software on their website for
the AC97 controller.

I know something is not workin. I should be able to plug some regular
speakers into the rear channel and hear something but I dont.

Default K8N audio problem

This is good, it looks like we are starting to recognize what the problem
is. You have not installed the ASUS Realtek audio control program for the
on-board sound system. Easy enough to do. I do not know what mobo you have,
but on my mobo a P5W DH Deluxe, Asus has on their web site updated drivers
for this board. They include drivers for the BIOS, Sound, Lan, RAD, and a
few more things. And yes, the mobo came with a CD that had all the
necessary drivers and programs on it. Perhaps you overlooked the program
for the Realtek audio mixer. Do check ASUS' web site for your mobo, chances
are good their are new drivers for the hardware on your mobo making the CD
that came with the mobo obsolete.

This would explain why things are all screwed up for you. Your audio
hardware is running in default mode, and who knows what that is. (I thought
I had a phase-inversion subtraction problem with the sound system until I
realized that the audio system was running in a 6 speaker system mode and
the center channel was subtracting common sound from the left and right
channels - I did not have a center channel hooked up to the computer - hence
no sound!) The Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager is complicated and hard to
understand the first time around. You can poke around and see what works,
or post a question and go from their.

Good luck William.
