Default Inspiron 1520

Good evening (here) I gave years ago my Inspiron 1520 to a friend and
she called me yesterday saying it made a clicking sound and it will not
boot anymore. From what I suppose it is the Hard drive that's gone awol.

Think I will replace it but do not know with which brand or kind.
Saw on Crucial site a 2.5 inches MX200 250 gig for 110 euros without
shipping (certified compatible). Is this a good deal in terms of
price/quality or should I look more elsewhere.

Any advice welcome
Thanks

$50 for 500gb is a low-end reasonable price in the US. Yours sounds
way high.

I'd suppose any 2.5" drive will do. They're made thinner today than
when the laptops were made, so you have to bear that in mind when
inserting it - the plug won't seat quite so automatically but has to
be aimed.

I don't know if a shim under it is desireable or even available, in
case the laptop is moved around a lot. Ours don't move so it doesn't
matter.

I upgraded my 1545 with an SSD...regardless of your choice, make sure that it plugs-in properly. They make them thinner now and you may "miss" the connector! (I had mine up-side-down to achieve this...) I think this place ships overseas, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820721108

Incidentally clicking doesn't sound like a HD
problem. Usually you'd get a no bootable device
message for fast HD problems.

Try just taking the HD out and see what it does.

Or get the boot window with f12 or whatever it is
and see if it pops up.

Like Ron said, remove the hard drive and see if the clicking stops. Odds are very good, given the age of the computer, that the hard drive has failed..

110 Euros for a 250GB SSD is not a bad price, considering you are across the pond. Prices are a little lower here in the US. You might also check with a well-regarded seller on eBay to see if you can improve the price. Also, Adorama in the US runs sales on SSDs now and then. I got some brand new 500GB SSDs from them at a very very low price. Wish I'd gotten more so I could sell SSD upgrades. Or, given the age of the computer, you could spend less and get a brand new hard drive 250GB and up. If the computer is a desktop and stays in one place, a hard drive would do just fine. If the 1520 travels around, go for the more reliable and faster SSD, which can withstand more G-force than the rest of the computer... Ben Myers

Don't SSD's auto-fail after too many writes? Compared to a traditional
magnetic HD.

3 for 3 of our SSDs failed, but maybe that was only an early kind. The
magnetic HDs have a much better record, most unfailed after ten years,
like on this computer.
