Default CD-Rs and CD-RWs not recognized

Until a few days ago, my combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive worked just fine.
It recognized all CD-Rs and CD-RWs and wrote them perfectly. But then
it simply stopped working. My computer doesn't even reognize that I
have inserted a CD-R or CD-RW. Under "My Computer," when I click on
the CD writing drive, it says there is no disc in the drive. When I
try to use Easy CD Creator to write a CD, it tells me to insert a disc
with sufficient space-- it thinks there is no disc inserted as well.
How can I get my computer to recognize that there is a CD-R or CD-RW
disc in the drive?

I am using a Windows ME computer, and using Easy CD Creator 4.
