P5B, XP64 & Asus-Flash
I had to RMA my first P5B after AsusUpdate failed, in the process of trying
to update the BIOS to version 0614. As a result there was no video after reboot. the Alt+F2 trick wouldnt work, nor would the "CrashFree" BIOS feature. So I returned the board under an RMA. Having recieved the RMA replacement board, knowing that lightning cant strike twice (!), I foolishly tried to flash 0614 using AsusUpdate again. Needless to say (!) this also failed, just like board #1, resulting in another dead board.... So there you go - there is something clearly wrong with AsusUpdate and/or the P5B and/or the 0614 BIOS. |

If there's one thing that shouldn't be done with Asus Update, it's updating the BIOS. There are so many other safe ways to do it. I have a P5B-Plus and I downloaded the BIOS file and used a flash drive to do the update, using EZ Flash 2 from within the BIOS with no problem. Of course, a floppy disk will do as well. Will the BIOS come up at all when you press Delete during the boot, or is it dead dead, as opposed to mostly dead. Do you have a plain P5B, or one of the dash something P5Bs? According to Asus, the latest BIOS for the P5B is version 1604, not 0614. Or, did you just transpose the numbers. http://support.asus.com/download/dow...n-us&model=P5B |

I've had no problem with asusupdater and P5b, flashed plenty of times. But I've also had no video, no beep no nothing after flash every time. That has been cured with a clear cmos procedure. |

If you can't get video how can you see what you're doing in the EZ-flash 2
screen. Of course you might be able to fluke it if you can guess how many times to tab around and find the new ROM. I thought crash-free only worked if the BIOS was corrupted in the first place. IIRC you also need to give the ROM a specific name. I really can't bring myself to use a utility that updatrs the BIOS through the OS. "Acedrew" wrote in message ...
