Default P4P800,SoundMax,Creative Audigy Gamer, 5.1 speakers

I have Altec Lansing 251 speakers and so far have
them running off the motherboard. I don't seem to
be getting the surround effect playing Unreal
Tournament 2003.
Should I use the sound card instead?
Games seem to have audio settings for Creative
support.
The speakers are connected correctly as I get
the sound from each in turn when running the config
and test window that is part of the SoundMax software.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave
