Question about External DVD Burner using USB 2.0, I have USB 1.0...

Hello to everyone at alt.comp.periphs.cdr!

I have a question about buying an external dvd burner using USB 2.0.
Our computer has USB 1.0, does that mean I cannot use this device? I
am worried if I buy this I will not be able to use it on USB 1.0
drives (because USB 1.0 is slower, and may not have enough throughput
to burn is my worry).

If anyone has any idea or has links (like to an FAQ, i did a search on
google but I got back websites selling burners and junk) to where I
can find this out please let me know.

Correct. The drive should function, but be useless for DVD recording
because a USB 1 port does not have enough throughput to write a DVD at even
1X speed.

USB 2.0 cards are cheap and plentiful.

Even if it did work, it would take 90 minutes to burn a DVD.

Firewire is much better than USB2, it has greater throughput and is a 2-way
connect. Max speeds on USB2 generally do not exceed 8x DVD and usually
around 12x DVD on Firewire. Firewire is also less troublesome.

It is possible to burn at 16x using USB2.0:

If you notice, the author of the site couldn't reach 16x using IEE1394.

There are always exceptions, but almost nobody has ever gotten more than 8x
from USB2, and Firewire is always faster unless you have a bad controller.
Some people can get 12x with USB2, but it's not stable.
