i have a q6700 im trying to put into a 680i board (striker extreme)

is something suppose to snap in? from what im seeing its spose to just lay in there, then you close the cap and lock it down

i lay it in there (gold arrow in the correct spot) and the cap doesnt come close to closing, and i dont want to force it down...any idea's?

No, something is not quite right, it should just drop right in, no insertion
force needed whatsoever.
I know you said it is, but make positively sure, the processor is aligned
properly.
You should feel a little resistance when lowering the locking lever, but it
should not feel forced much.

There is an installation movie here.

If it is in the socket correctly, it still takes a bit of force to lock it
down. I got a little nervous when I did my first S775 too. Make SURE that
the processor is correctly oriented before locking it down.

There are few mechanical challenges in building a computer, but one,
correctly installing the CPU, is a biggie. The first time or two you are
faced with a new socket/CPU connector design you don't have a good idea of
how much force is too much. The motherboard AND the CPU are at risk in this
case, so approach the task carefully, sort of feeling your way. And read
the earlier posts in this thread. You just drop the CPU onto the spiky
socket array with no resistance at all. Closing the cap forces the tiny
sharp teeth in the socket into the tiny balls of solder on the bottom of the
CPU, so a certain amount of soft resistance is to be expected as the cap
closes. This is unlike installing a 473 or 478 socket CPU when you feel
resistance when INSERTING the CPU into the socket, but little to no
resistance is felt when moving the latching lever (that slides a mechanism
INSIDE the socket) until you lock it.
