Default Presario 425 serial port problem.

I'm trying to get a file off an old Compaq Presario 425, which has a
floppy drive so dirty or otherwise wrecked that I can't write to it.
I'm not in a position to do anything heroic like replace the drive or
do any serious monkeying with the machine. It is running DR-DOS 7.0.2
and not connected to a network.

I connected a laptop to it via the serial port, and was just going to
do a simple "MODE COM1:9600" and "COPY myfile COM1:", with a terminal
program capturing the data on the laptop. However, writing to COM1:
produces "Abort Retry Ignore". The cable and laptop are fine - this
worked connected to another PC. I tried COM2:, and while I don't get
"A/R/I", it doesn't appear on the laptop.

The machine is using the serial port for a retail point of sale
printer, so I know it is working. I thought the POS software might be
doing some funny setups, so I temporarily renamed CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT so they wouldn't execute, but no luck.

Is there any sort of firmware setup that they could have used to set
the serial port up in some non-standard configuration (weird IRQ
settings, perhaps)? Or does the 425 have an internal modem that could
be interfering somehow? My assumption was that the external 9-pin
port would be COM1: in a standard setting. Is there any sort of BIOS
setup which can be activated on startup - I tried F1 but it doesn't do
anything - the 425 is after all back from 1993.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
