monitor "no signal" - if I've got to replace mobo how to improve?

My fan stopped working so in the process of changing heatsink + fan,
the computer then stopped working (I will never find it easy attaching
a heatsink to the processor catches - am I alone? - obviously I
destroyed the mobo in the process).

After that I couldn't hear it booting up - fans worked, power on light
worked - no'firing up' and 'no signal' from monitor (monitor works with
other PC). Took it apart - all cards etc, and rebuilt, checking
connections etc. Bought and tried new processor (went from P3 933 to
1.0G - which Gigabyte GA-60XT mobo could apparently handle). No Joy.
From reading other 'groups.google' posts I decided it's got to be
either the video card or mobo. My video card works fine in another pc.
I'd like to interchange the dimms with dimms from an old P2 machine -
but my GA-60XT papers say it supports only 3.3V SDRAM DIMM - but I
can't see from the HYM7V64400 TFG-10 hyundai 9802 dim ram stick
(removed from old P2 machine) what ' v ' it is? could i damage
anything by trying them - they clearly fit in the slots though they are
a different height - but the 'v' is wrong. It could destroy the memory
dimms couldn't it if I swapped them willy nilly?

Can't hear any beeps because not sure whether i've got onboard sound
though i thought i used to.

So:

I've replaced the CPU
monitor works - tested on another machine
video card works on another machine
The hard disk works in other machines
the lights fire up on the mobo
(the hard disk led doesn't fire up though)
If i assume the memory is okay (once tried) and since i've bought a new
processor, and found the video card's working - must i assume it's the
mobo?

If this is the case and i've got to buy a new mobo - since my last mobo
was a gigabyte GA-60XT-A - (and can't afford to upgrade all components
to a P4 mobo/processor) can I improve on the gigabyte GA-60XT-A.
(which only had max 512mb ram - I could up that couldn't I?)

Sorry - lots of questions there but any help much appreciated

bios update maybe in order to see the 1 gig chip
is this a slot 1 or a flip chip?

socket 370 - but the gigabyte spec says it should be able to handle
that so should i need to update the bios. surely i have to get the
machine going first don't i as i'm getting "no signal" from the monitor
and can't get any further.

Put down the screwdriver and let someone else do it.
