Default CD-RW 1-4X media

Anyone know of someone stocking 1-4X CD-RW media at anything resembling sensible
prices.

'4X' media is typically no good here, as it is typically media from the low end
of the 'High Speed' range (and, courtesy of the specification, utterly
incompatible with 1-4X drives, which we seem to be supporting in abundance,
despite far faster drives having been available for years now. Grrr....)

(For the uninitiated, anything capable of being written at 8X or higher is not
capable of being written by a number antique drive I seem to be lumbered with
supporting, unlike CD-R, where you can write a 52X disc on a 1X burner if you
really must)

Have you tried SVP?

Yep, first place I looked. They sell '4X'. My experience tells me that these
are more likely to be low-end 'high speed', not low-speed media.

Besides, your link is out of date. SVP are now at svp.co.uk

Have you tried looking for firmware updates for the affected drives? - this
often resolves problems like this

If you really must use RW media (it has never been particularly reliable)
then try taking a look at audio RW media. This will probably be more
expensive than computer media but it has been designed to work in 1X
drives.

I would also think about replacing the old drive - perfectly respectable
CD-RW drives are only 20 quid nowadays.

Cheers

James.

I know this is not answering your question but...

Why bother with RW media? CD-R is so cheap that CD-RW can't possibly
save you significant money. Is there a security issue that a nice deep
scratch or a quick scorch from a cigarette lighter can't solve?

I have a packet of these from ebuyer, three pounds for ten in jewel
cases. I use them on an older drive which will only burn my svcd tv
shows at 4x and then I reuse them for the next program. It has worked
just fine so far, though I don't really know how you discriminate but
they seem to work fine.
